  1. We go 3/4 in the Acting categories! The only category we differ on is Supporting Actor. I don't even nominate Ermey. I nominate D'Onofrio instead but I give the win to McCann (on some days I give it to Molina or Downey Jr.). I have many more films to see from this year. My Best Picture winner is My Life as a Dog. I just LOVE that movie to pieces. We may have the same Director win though. I go back and forth between Kubrick and Wenders.

Oh, and Less than Zero is a total wash, except for Downey Jr.'s BRILLIANT turn. The novel is one of my favorites, and the film just destroys everything that made the book so great. That said, Downey is a revelation.

    1. YAY! I didn't know Bale won 2 Fistis! :) D'Onofrio was in the running. If Downey Jr. gets added, he'll take out Tighe.

LOL, as soon as I watched My Life as a Dog, I knew it was at least in your top 5. It was down to that and Wings of Desire for the 5th slot. I enjoyed My Life more, but I admire Wings more. It was a tough call!

    2. LOL, I love how just through our blog friendship you 'know' my taste enough to know what movies will make my ballots! Wings of Desire is a brilliant film though, and it is also in my top five (which also consists of Full Metal Jacket, The Princess Bride and Au Revoir les Enfants). It's a great year for film though. The Dead, Raising Arizona and Broadcast News just miss my ballot, and I haven't seen the one-two punch of Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring, but I do have them both on my DVR.

    3. Haha, I know right?! Nice top 5, as always. :) Raising Arizona isn't anywhere near my top 10, but I do like it. I almost gave Holly Hunter a double nod actually. I could've put Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring in 1986, but I stuck with their US release dates, since I've had them in this year for so long. Can't wait to see how they fare at the Fistis.

  2. Full Metal Jacket is a great movie. I am planning to share it with my son during the upcoming homeschool year. When my daughter and I discussed it, as part of her studies, it led to conversations about the Vietnam War, the Cold War, Jungian Psychology, and other interesting stuff.

    1. I wish I'd seen that film in school. I had to seek it out on my own. :)

  3. I can't argue with this list at all. Though I do love The Last Emperor, it's not as good as Full Metal Jacket, Withnail & I, and Wings of Desire.

    1. Glad you like my picks man. I like The Last Emperor, but I really need to rewatch it.

  4. LOVE your acting picks. All spirited choices right there.

As is the case with all Kubrick films, Full Metal Jacket grows on me everytime I watch it. It's perfect.

    1. Thanks! For the longest time, Douglas was my Best Actor winner, but a rewatch of Empire of the Sun a few months ago changed that.

  5. Nice to see Jean de Florette and Wings of Desire here, two outstanding foreign films. Agree with Withnail & I for screenplay, and R. Lee Ermey for Full Metal Jacket.
I couldn't even finish Barfly, Bukowski's style probably wasn't made for film, and is better to read. Would highly recommend Cry Freedom, though.
Don't know if you rank Opera a 1987 film, it's considered among Dario Argento's best, and in my top 10 of '87

    1. Glad you dig those picks. I do want to see Barfly for Rourke's performance, but I can see how it might not translate well. I tried to see Cry Freedom before I did this, but I ran out of time. I'll definitely check it out at some point, though.

Ooh, I overlooked Opera. I'll add it to my watchlist. :)

  6. Wow we're miles apart on our choices this year. I haven't seen three of your best picture nominees and of the two I have I thought Empire was fine but didn't really move me and I hated Full Metal Jacket. Also missing from my list is any mention of the academy's winner The Last Emperor which I found to be visually beautiful but a thundering bore. Such is film viewing I guess.

    Picture:
    Broadcast News-Winner
    84 Charing Cross Road
    Hope & Glory
    Maurice
    Radio Days
This turned out to be a mini sweep for Broadcast News. It's not that I don't think the other films are worth awarding but News got so many of the basics right it was elevated just enough over the pack to emerge victorious in most of the big categories.

    Director:
    Woody Allen-Radio Days
    James L. Brooks-Broadcast News-Winner
    John Boorman-Hope & Glory
    Roger Donaldson-No Way Out
    James Ivory-Maurice
It may have plotholes you could drive a truck through but Donaldson's taut direction of No Way Out makes it involving and kinetic. Allen's affectionate gaze back at radio's heyday and Boorman's at his childhood during the blitz are both suffused with the charm of memory. Ivory gives his customary exemplary treatment to a unique Forster work. Even though its look at network news now has the tinge of nostaglia at the time of release Brooks really had the pulse of modern news gathering and the personalities involved down.

    Actor:
    Christian Bale-Empire of the Sun
    Anthony Hopkins-84 Charing Cross Road
    Gary Oldman-Prick Up Your Ears
    James Wilby-Maurice-Winner
    Robin Williams-Good Morning, Vietnam
Vietnam provides Williams a good showcase for both his manic energy as well as a chance to stretch a bit. Bale, Hopkins and Oldman all expertly represent different generations and classes of Englishmen and varying challenges they face but Wilby's quietly intense struggle with coming to terms with his homosexuality and then trying to align that with living a life in Edwardian England is deceptively complex.

    Actress:
    Anne Bancroft-84 Charing Cross Road
    Lillian Gish-The Whales of August
    Holly Hunter-Broadcast News-Winner
    Diane Keaton-Baby Boom
    Christine Lahti-Housekeeping
I love all five of these performances and while Hunter was instantly my pick the others are fantastic pieces of acting. This is my favorite Diane Keaton performance, it uses every part of her persona in the most charming way possible. As a bibliophile myself I'm a big fan of the book-centric Charing Cross and Anne's lovely reading of Helene Hanff. Housekeeping is an odd little number but Christine Lahti treats her eccentric character with great respect always representing her as hearing her own interior voice never as the crazy woman others see her as. I would have loved to hand this to Lillian Gish who even at the tail end of her career was able to turn in an observant, gentle performance, unsurprisingly her close-ups speak volumes. Still I have to go with Hunter, an actress I have a limited fondness for, who really digs into the character of Jane. She's unafraid to show Jane's faults as well as her strengths thereby making her more likable not less even if at times she's exasperating.

    1. I've always loved Full Metal Jacket, and Empire of the Sun, while flawed, really got me on a rewatch. Love the Broadcast News sweep. I haven't seen four of your Best Actress nominees, and Maurice is a major blind spot for me.

  7. Supporting Actor:
    Albert Brooks-Broadcast News-Winner
    Rupert Graves-Maurice
    John Hurt-From the Hip
    Alfred Molina-Prick Up Your Ears
    Will Patton-No Way Out
As the fanatically loyal aid in No Way Out Patton is chilling in his single minded ruthlessness. Molina disquieting in his insecurity and possessiveness of Joe Orton in Prick Up Your Ears and Graves touching showing Scudder's guarded hopes and fears in Maurice. Hurt's seemingly benign college professor facade masking the fact that he's a homicidal maniac is exquisitely played, he's my runner-up. The others are excellent but Brooks and his part are such a good fit that it utilizes both his schlubiness and deprecating humor to perfect affect making Aaron a real person and his competition with William Hurt's suave but vapid Tom very believable.

    Supporting Actress:
    Joan Cusack-Broadcast News
    Olympia Dukakis-Moonstruck-Winner
    Mia Farrow-Radio Days
    Sarah Miles-Hope & Glory
    Vanessa Redgrave-Prick Up Your Ears
Farrow's a stitch in Radio Days, she's my runner-up actually. Sarah Miles a wonderful representation of English pluck during wartime in Hope & Glory. Vanessa her usual superior self-cynical, wise and tough as Orton's agent in Prick Up Your Ears and Cusack enormously appealing as Hunter's somewhat daffy assistant. But this is the one category where I agree with the academy's choice, Olympia Dukakis is nothing short of brilliant as Rose Castorini in Moonstruck. The movie is a lovely little comedy that was feted way beyond it's merits but she is the jewel at its center. When she tells another character "I know who I am." it rings true and its the actress's knowledge of that fact that makes the performance so great.

    1. Glad to see the main cast of Prick Up Your Ears recognized, and more love for Broadcast News is great. Farrow is my runner-up as well, but I'd probably put Dukakis at #5 right now.

  8. Hi Josh,
I finally caught up with The Dead and liked it a great deal. It wouldn't make my picture or director list but Anjelica Huston knocked me out and she'd replace Joan Cusack on my supporting list. I'd still hand the prize to Olympia Dukakis but Anjelica would be my runner up now, her performance was brilliant.

So glad you loved Huston in the film. It's one of my all-time favorite supporting performances.
