88th Oscar Winners Announced

Mad Max: Fury Road won the night, taking home 6 awards.

Well, that's that. With a close race for Best Picture heading into the final weeks of voting, Spotlight came out ahead, grabbing only two wins, including the top prize. It was a pretty great night on the whole, with Mad Max: Fury Road dominating the below-the-line categories; Leonardo DiCaprio and Ennio Morricone finally winning; and Ex Machina (deservedly) benefiting from vote-splitting in a highly competitive Visual Effects category. Overall, it was a better list of winners than last year. (Though, I'm one of maybe five people who likes "Writing's on the Wall".)

In all, I predicted 17/24 categories correctly, which is down from 21/24 last year. It was a weird year, though, so I'll take it.

  1. You did better than me, I got 15/24 correct. Sorry that Sly missed out as it was probably his last chance, but happy to see Leo finally win

    1. Some of the categories were tricky this year. I was thrilled for Leo, and he gave a great speech. It would've been nice to see Sly win, but I did like Rylance's performance as well.

  2. SO glad that Mark Rylance won over Stallone. I don't necessarily have a problem with career Oscars if the performance awarded is a good one, Geraldine Page in Trip to Bountiful comes to mind, but Stallone certainly doesn't have the depth of performance history to justify that. I genuinely think Rylance did the best work and that's what should matter.

    1. I would've voted for Hardy, but I also prefer Rylance's performance to Stallone's. Plus, I'm happy Bridge of Spies won something, since it (and Hanks' performance in particular) has grown on me a lot.

  3. Hello Josh! I just posted my recap too, boy I was quite surprised by Rylance win and also Spotlight winning at the end. I was rooting for Fury Road but if they didn't win, I was hoping it wouldn't be The Revenant for Best Picture, so I'm glad Spotlight took it! All things considered, it was an excellent and important film, it's one that really stayed w/ you for a while too.

    1. Hi Ruth! I knew Fury Road didn't stand a chance, but I LOVE that Spotlight won. I'm a fan of The Revenant, though. ;)
