  1. I forgot how many legit classics came out that year. Deciding between Pacino in Dog Day & Nicholson in Cuckoo's Nest...wow, talk about a tough choice.

Hmmm....I still haven't seen Barry Lyndon or The French Connection II.

    1. Yeah, there are a lot of great films from this year. Nicholson is fantastic, but Pacino is an easy choice for me.

Barry Lyndon is essential. See French Connection II for Hackman's performance, which is the highlight of the film.

  2. Oh I've been curious about Barry Lyndon as I like period dramas, nice to see you like that film, Josh. Oh Three Days of Condor is another one on my must-see list!

    1. I think you'd find something to like in both of those, Ruth. I'm not sure if you'd love them though.

  3. One of the best years for film ever. Had no idea you were such a Lyndon fan. That's a perfect movie and I love it, but my heart will always be with Dog Day.

    1. I know, right? I can't argue with Dog Day. There are several films from this year that'd be worthy winners.

  4. You love Barry Lyndon a whole lot more than I do. On the surface it would seem to be just up my alley with Kubrick, who I respect, directing a literary period piece, which I love, but I've never warmed to it. It's been years so maybe I'll give it another go.

    Picture:
    Dog Day Afternoon-Winner
    Jaws
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    Picnic at Hanging Rock
    Three Days of the Condor
A fantastic year for which the wrong film won in all categories. Cuckoo's Nest is a good film but would be my fifth choice in every category it competes in. Each time I watch Condor I like it more and more, it would be my runner up but Dog Day is just too special to not take the prize.

    Director:
Milos Forman-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    Sidney Lumet-Dog Day Afternoon
Sydney Pollack-Three Days of the Condor
    Steven Spielberg-Jaws
    Peter Weir-Picnic at Hanging Rock-Winner
Lumet was on such a run in the mid-70's which continued with Dog Day but I fell for the swoony, seemingly innocent aura laced with menace that Weir creates in Picnic Rock on first viewing and to this day makes it such a unique viewing experience.

    Actor:
    Gene Hackman-Night Moves
Jack Nicholson-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    Al Pacino-Dog Day Afternoon-Winner
Robert Redford-Three Days of the Condor
    James Whitmore-Give 'Em Hell, Harry!
It was so hard to bypass both Redford's involving work in Condor and Whitmore's amazing one man show as Truman but this may just be Pacino's best performance in a career of stellar work.

    Actress:
Isabelle Adjani-The Story of Adele H.-Winner
Karen Black-The Day of the Locust
Louise Fletcher-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    Carol Kane-Hester Street
    Rachel Roberts-Picnic at Hanging Rock
The others give marvelous performances but no one comes close to Adjani.

    Supporting Actor:
    John Cazale-Dog Day Afternoon
Brad Dourif-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    Charles Durning-Dog Day Afternoon-Winner
John Houseman-Three Days of the Condor
    Oliver Reed-Tommy
What a talent was lost when Cazale died so prematurely, I could have easily chosen him for each of the three performances I nominated him for and probably more but having handed it to him for Godfather I'm going to choose the great Durning who was consistently wonderful through the years and terrific in Dog Day.

    Supporting Actress:
    Ann-Margret-Tommy
    Barbara Feldon-Smile-Winner
    Lee Grant-Shampoo
    Goldie Hawn-Shampoo
    Lily Tomlin-Nashville
The other three women were outstanding but this was between Ann-Margret's fierce, go for broke Nora that utilizes all of her considerable talents and Barbara Feldon's crazed pageant director Brenda. Ann-Margret succeeds on excess, there really is no other way to play the role but Brenda could have easily been a shrew, Feldon though sly restraint makes her hysterical in every sense of the word.

    1. I've seen Barry Lyndon two or three times, and it holds up well for me. That said, I consider Jaws and Dog Day Afternoon two of the all-time greats.

Weir is an interesting choice, and I need to see Feldon's performance, among others. Glad to see Hackman pop up in Best Actor, and I love your other acting wins.

  5. Hi Josh,

Can't believe when I was doing this year I forgot about The Maids starring Glenda Jackson and Susannah York. Have you ever seen it? It was a small film produced by The American Film Theatre based on a Jean Genet play which in turn was based on a true life incident.

I found the film intriguing as opposed to loving it but the two actresses were absolutely amazing. Had I remembered they would have both been in my actress line-up replacing Carol Kane and Karen Black. Isabelle Adjani would still be my winner but it would have been a tighter race and a more difficult decision.

    1. Hi Joel,

I haven't seen it, but it sounds amazing, if only for the performances. I'll have to give it a look.

I'm going to make a list of the films you've mentioned, so I can keep track of which ones I need to see.
