  1. Of the films you listed that you want to see, I would exclude Fur because it's a film that is just extremely pretentious and full of itself. A very disappointing follow-up from the people who did Secretary. I would also avoid Factory Girl as I think it's a very poor bio-pic on Edie Sedgwick that takes too many dramatic liberties and it's casting is just distracting that includes an extremely bland Hayden Christensen as a character based on Bob Dylan. I totally recommend Old Joy, The Host, and A Scanner Darkly as these 3 films are from highly-revered auteurs who know what to do.

    1. I want to see Factory Girl and Fur for the performances, but I'm not expecting much from the films. Of course, those last 3 films are a higher priority for me.

  2. Glad to see the love for Children of Men. That's also my top flick of '06. And as a Nas fan, I'm ecstatic you gave a nom to Shine on 'Em.

    1. Glad you like those picks. I'm surprised "Shine on 'Em" didn't get nominated anywhere that year.

  3. So Scorsese FINALLY won an Oscar for The Departed and you'd take that away from him? Not even for pity's sake? That's cruel, Josh !! :D

    1. Haha, I know, right? The Departed was my winner for the longest time, until I rewatched Children of Men recently. I still give Scorsese 6 Best Director wins though, so he's got plenty. :)

  4. I love that we have so many crossover nominees and winners even! I haven't seen Breaking and Entering, but I really want to. And LASSGARD!!! I'm so happy you nominate him. UGH, that truck scene devastated me. He's amazing in that movie.

    1. I love the performances in After the Wedding! Also, Bier was my #6 in Best Director. That category was WAY too crowded. I couldn't even fit Coppola in.

Ooh, I hope you get to see Breaking and Entering soon. It fell out of my top 10 (even used to be in my top 5), but I still love the performances from Law and Binoche. It's got a great ensemble cast, actually.

  5. Oh, great to see Sheen and Blunt among your nominees! I'm still pissed off the Academy ignored Sheen that year, along with the 2 next years with Frost/Nixon and The Damned United.

You should check out Thank You for Smoking and The Descent - great movies!

    1. Ugh. That still bothers me. It was probably the easiest year for Sheen to get nominated, too. :(

I really want to see them!

  6. I'm still bummed James McAvoy got shut out for The Last King of Scotland. I thought he was great. I'm glad you included "Never Gonna Break My Faith" in the Best Song category. I was shocked when that got shut out.

    1. McAvoy was great, but I just couldn't fit him in. I wish he'd been nominated, even if it would've been a wrongfully placed supporting nod. Yeah, I thought that song would get in too. Bobby just didn't register like I thought it would.

  7. If I were to make a ballot from this year, no doubt Children of Men would make the list and perhaps Casino Royale, certainly one of my all time fave Bond films. Btw, Thank You For Smoking is great, hope you get to see that some time, Josh.

    1. Casino Royale is my #6, so it just missed in Best Picture. :) I really need to watch Thank You for Smoking.

  8. Great picks man. 2006 was a really solid year, my favorite being Babel and/or United 93. Tough to choose. But Children of Men... how can I argue with you there? A terrific film.

    1. Thanks man. I rewatched Babel and United 93 beforehand, but they still don't make my top 5. I dig 'em though.

  9. Picture:
    Children of Men
    Little Miss Sunshine
    The Painted Veil
    The Prestige-Winner
    Thank You for Smoking
I still have several films from this year to see but I love all five of these. Children of Men is a close runner up but the abrupt ending diminished it for me so I went with the clever Prestige.

    Director:
    Alfonso Cuaron-Children of Men-Winner
    John Curran-The Painted Veil
    Jonathan Dayton/Valerie Faris-Little Miss Sunshine
    Christopher Nolan-The Prestige
    Jason Reitman-Thank You for Smoking
The ending aside Cuaron's direction of the rest of the film is superior.

    Actor:
    Aaron Eckhart-Thank You for Smoking
    Richard Griffiths-The History Boys
    Toby Jones-Infamous
    Greg Kinnear-Little Miss Sunshine
    Clive Owen-Children of Men-Winner
This was the toughest category for me and I was sorry to have to exclude Bale & Jackman who were both terrific in Prestige. Kinnear is a fine journeyman actor but his role in Miss Sunshine asked for more than his usual rumpled charm and he did very well by it. Eckhart's role presents much the same situation, a competent actor in a role that allowed him a bit more opportunity than usual. Griffiths recreating his stage role is compelling and Jones given a rare chance at a lead is actually better as Capote than Hoffman was the previous year. I'm going with Owen however for his complex work in Children of Men but Jones is a very close second.

    Actress:
    Penolope Cruz-Volver
    Judi Dench-Notes on a Scandal
    Helen Mirren-The Queen
    Brittany Murphy-Love and Other Disasters
    Naomi Watts-The Painted Veil-Winner
Excellent performances from all and I'm glad Helen Mirren won this year since she hadn't been acknowledged before but Naomi Watts, an actress I like but am not often impressed by, does some of her best work in Painted Veil.

    Supporting Actor:
    Ben Affleck-Hollywoodland
    Steve Carell-Little Miss Sunshine-Winner
    Dominic Cooper-The History Boys
    Rob Lowe-Thank You for Smoking
    Edward Norton-The Painted Veil
I was surprised by Rob Lowe's precise takeoff on a new age executive who is oblivious to his own pretentions but as much as I liked the other performers in Miss Sunshine Carrell created the deepest character.

    Supporting Actress:
    Emily Blunt-The Devil Wears Prada
    Abigail Breslin-Little Miss Sunshine
    Jennifer Hudson-Dreamgirls
    Diane Lane-Hollywoodland
    Meryl Streep-The Devil Wears Prada-Winner
This was a competition between the Prada girls. Streep was nominated in lead but Hathaway was in that spot in Prada, Meryl hung over the picture but she wasn't its focus so to me she's supporting. Blunt was wonderful but the dragonish Miranda Priestly is one of Meryl's best recent performances.

    1. This is one of my favorite years for cinema, so it's great that we have so many differences. The Prestige is a masterful film, and I love that Cuaron and Owen win for Children of Men. Watts, Carell and Streep were very good, but I had way too many performances to choose from this year. So glad Blunt, Dench and Cruz made the cut, and Affleck barely missed my lineup. (I had Nicholson for The Departed, but I recently replaced him with Tom Hollander for his comedic work in A Good Year, which I shamelessly love. I also switched from DiCaprio to Law as my Best Actor winner a few months after I originally posted this.) I really need to watch Thank You for Smoking.
