I've been busy all weekend, so here's a quick and dirty list of my ten favorite horror films of all-time. Most of them need no explanation, but feel free to sound off in the comments.
10. The Thing (1982, John Carpenter)
9. Carrie (1976, Brian De Palma)
8. Rosemary's Baby (1968, Roman Polanski)
7. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984, Wes Craven)
6. The Exorcist (1973, William Friedkin)
5. Suspiria (1977, Dario Argento)
4. Psycho (1960, Alfred Hitchcock)
3. The Shining (1980, Stanley Kubrick)
2. Repulsion (1965, Roman Polanski)
1. Halloween (1978, John Carpenter)
I've only seen 5 of these, but they are definitely worthy choices. I'm currently torturing myself (I get nightmares) by going through horror films to make a top 10 list myself.
ReplyDeleteHaha. I don't get nightmares, but I do sometimes cover my eyes and peak through my fingers.
DeleteThe Exorcist is the only one I've seen here but that's the reason I don't watch horror movies, that one still haunts me at times even though it's been years since I've seen it!
ReplyDeleteThat's understandable. I don't watch many horror films, but I do love a lot of the ones I've seen.
DeleteGreat list! We share a lot of the same favorites.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Glad to hear it.
DeleteLove nearly all your choices, except The Thing, which, granted, is an 80s classic, and loved by many, but I just never found it to be greatest-of-all-time material, pretty formulaic to me(besides the special effects)
ReplyDeleteI've only seen Carpenter's film once, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about :) To each his own!
Haha. No problem. That's fair enough, Chris.
DeleteThe ending gave me chills, and it's actually one my favorite closing scenes of all-time. The film HAD to be on here for that scene alone. :)
Great list! Seen all of those - true classics. Glad to see Repulsion so high on the list!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I love how crazy that movie is.
DeleteGreat list! I am not a big horror fan, but I love The Shining and Psycho. I read Rosemary's Baby in middle school, and I was completely ignorant of the premise. The best way to go into it -- it scared the crap out of me. Loved it! :-)
ReplyDeleteI wasn't crazy about the movie adaptation, from what I can remember -- the last scene struck me as -- I don't know -- over the top, I guess. Maybe my experience with the book kind of spoiled it for me? But that film did have some great moments!
And as a funny, though totally gross, side note, during my pregnancies I did actually have occasional cravings for raw (or very rare) meat. Odd. I called them my "Rosemary moments." I guess I need to shave these kids heads to see if "666" is engraved on any of their scalps.
Sorry if that was TMI. ;-)
Thanks! I'm not a big horror fan either, but I love these films.
DeleteWhen I saw Rosemary's Baby, I only knew there was a cult in it. I agree that scene is a bit over the top, but the rest of the film is so creepy.
Ha! I welcome funny/gross side notes. :)
Well, if I'd watched the movie without knowing the premise, I would've really liked it too. It's one of those stories where it REALLY helps to read/see it without spoilers. It's all about the twists. ;-)
DeleteBut the closing scene is so much better in the novel than in the movie. It's much more subtle, hence it's creepier. Plus you see the struggle in Rosemary's mind. Imagine feeling a moral obligation to kill your own baby (but not being able to do it.) OY!
Yeah, those are good points.
DeleteDude, this is a superb list, seem 'em all, love 'em all. Really solid picks and solid ordering, in my opinion!
ReplyDeleteThanks man. Glad you dig it!
