Jonny's Ultra-Hard Oscar Quiz

I just discovered this amazing quiz that really makes me question my Oscar knowledge. It's over 100 questions, but each answer is linked from a list of them, so you don't have to do it all at once. Check it out if you're interested. It really stumped me. Of the first ten, I only got two correct.

Top 25 Underrated Movie Songs

Tom Waits makes the list twice.

Most of these songs were eligible for the Best Original Song Oscar, but none of them were nominated. By the way, I tried to go with less popular picks.

Top 10 College Songs

David Grellier (left) performing with Electric Youth.

Alex at And So It Begins... recently posted his updated top 10 M83 songs list, which offers him a lot of inspiration. I have the same connection with College, David Grellier's electronic act whose track "A Real Hero" (ft. Electric Youth) was famously used in Drive. If I want to be inspired, I listen to College. I go back and forth on the rankings, but I love every track on here. Enjoy!

Two Year Anniversary!

As of today, I've been posting on this blog for two years. Since last year, I've gained a few more followers, and I just wanted to thank any and every person who has stopped by this blog. Thanks so much, readers, for the comments, the links, the tweets, and the support.

My Criterion Collection

I decided to see just how small my collection was, and found that I have just 33 Criterion titles (not counting those in box sets). However, I also have 31 alternate editions of films that Criterion has released. Take a look at them below, along with my Criterion release wishlist. (Note: Images correspond to the Criterion edition I have. For instance, I only have two titles on Blu-ray, as indicated below.)

Question About Friday's Post

"I have a question."

As per majority opinion, I will be posting a full lineup of nominees starting this Friday. My question is this: how would you prefer them? I could post them by year or by category. I've got a system worked out for a yearly format, which will allow me to do a different decade each week. But if you want them by category, I have a second question: Which category (listed below) should I do first? Let me know in the comments. Thanks.

Best Picture
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Best Cinematography
Best Music (Score and Song)
Best Screenplays (Adapted and Original)
Best Film Editing

Martin Scorsese's Film School Curriculum

I stumbled upon last year's Fast Company interview with the Oscar-winning director, film historian, and preservationist Martin Scorsese, who names 85 films that have inspired him. Given the man's impressive knowledge of film, I'm eager to finish off the titles I haven't seen yet. There are several on here I love, and many that I need to see. If you want to know about film, Scorsese recommends these, and I don't think you can go wrong with this director's introductory "film school". Check out the list below.

10 Things to Know Before the Oscar Noms

With the Oscar nominations coming later this week, I thought it would be fun to mention a few stats and reminders before they arrive. These are a random assortment, but maybe you'll find something interesting.
