Julianne Moore could win her first Oscar! |
Since last month's predictions, Still Alice has been picked up, making Julianne Moore the new Best Actress frontrunner. Also, American Sniper has emerged as a potential contender, and Fury, Inherent Vice, and Into the Woods are dwindling. Foxcatcher also seems to be falling off the Best Picture radar. The Imitation Game seems poised to be a major player, but Interstellar and Unbroken will be in the hunt as well. Selma could be a big, though it's hard to guess where it will fit in the Oscar race.

I'm still a little iffy about American Sniper. I think Fury looks a bit better. I would love Carrie Coon to get in on the Best Supporting Actress race too.
ReplyDeleteI'd love for Carrie Coon to break into the Oscar race! I think American Sniper could play better with the Academy, but Fury looks like a better film.
DeleteYeah, I think I'll be adding Theory and Sniper to my predictions next month. I think Cooper could make a dash for the actual trophy. The trailer looks really sharp, and his character is said to be VERY baity. Three times a charm?
ReplyDeleteI could see Cooper breaking into the Best Actor race. I wander who he'd knock out. Maybe Affleck. Perhaps the final lineup will be Carell, Cooper, Cumberbatch, Keaton, and Redmayne.
DeleteI really hope Julianne Moore can ride this train to a win. There's the whole she's due thing, which of course she is, but from what I've read she's phenomenal in the film. The best of both worlds, although the character does sound awfully close to Julie Chrisite's Fiona in Away From Her, which I'm still disappointed she lost for.
ReplyDeleteI'd be more disappointed though if she had lost to anyone else but Marion Cotillard the only one who gave a performance anywhere near her equal that year. Puzzlingly that win seems to have hurt Marion in the academy's eyes somehow. It might have been better for Julie to have taken it that year then the many high quality performances Marion's given since might not have been ignored and she would have been awarded more.
I'm looking forward to Foxcatcher too. Also no offense to her but I'd love a season without a Meryl Streep nomination. No matter where she ends up lead or supporting she manages to take over a great deal of the conversation when she's in the race even if she doesn't have a prayer of winning.
Apparently, Maps to the Stars is also getting a qualifying run for the Oscars. Maybe Moore could make a play for a Supporting Actress nomination as well. I really hope she wins for something this year.
DeleteCotillard's win is one of my favorites, though Christie is terrific. I'm guessing Cotillard just missed for Rust and Bone, and category confusion for Nine didn't help her. The Academy might still love her.
Haha, I'm thrilled when Streep doesn't factor into the Oscar race. She's a great actress, but she often feels like a filler nomination at this point.
