I have so much to see from this year, but HELL YES to the double Casablanca Lead wins. I give the Supporting win to Andrews, who SLAYS in that movie (just breaks my heart in so many places), but I haven't seen Coburn.
ReplyDeleteYay! Bogie and Bergman! Andrews or Walbrook would be my runner-up, but both are superb. Though Coburn's performance isn't a stretch for him, he's brilliant in the role.

DeleteCan't argue with Casablanca, like Alex said, perfection. Also, love the appreciation for Day of Wrath, that could be my favorite Dreyer film, just ahead of Passion of Joan of Arc, and Ordet in third.

DeleteYou can't better Casablanca for sheer craftsmenship and excellence. I don't think I've ever met anyone who doesn't at least like the film which with most classics is rare, there's always dissent but that doesn't seem to hold for this. I've never heard of Day of Wrath but I looked it up and I'm intrigued. Aside from The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp which I found underwhelming our choices for picture and director are similar.

Curtiz was able to handle any genre with ease, a rare gift that even most of the best directors can't do but Casablanca is his pinnacle. Berkeley's The Gang's All Here may not be the best picture but to control the elephantine production, The Lady in the Tutti-Frutti Hat alone must have been a logistical nightmare, was a special skill that Berkeley seemed to have a special aptitude for.

This wasn't a tough choice since this is a near perfect match of actor and part but the four other performers were all amazing. Shadow of a Doubt is probably Cotton's best performance.

I so wanted to give this to Ingrid but Teresa Wright's performance in Shadow of a Doubt is just so finely judged I had to go with her. I noticed that you had Gene Tierney in support, her screen time runs the edge between lead and support, but although Ameche dominates Heaven Can Wait without her sensitive portrayal his struggle wouldn't mean half as much.

This was the hardest category for me to decide. Rains is such an engaging piece of the Casablanca puzzle. Coburn is inimitable in The More the Merrier, he's almost as good in Heaven Can Wait. Cregar is the very essence of charming, bemused deviltry in Heaven Can Wait and Andrews tears at my heart in Ox-Box Incident. But Jack Carson, an underappreciated performer if there ever was one, in The Hard Way is startlingly good. Watching him progress from his usual glad handing, hale fellow well met persona to a sad, broken husk is heartbreaking. Sparking off Ida Lupino and Dennis Morgan, in his best onscreen performance, he's incredible.

Carmen Miranda is a postive force of nature in Gang and Paxinou is very good in Bells, I movie I found to be a ponderous bore, but watching Lucile Watson slowly being shaken out of the magnolias, changing in subtle but human ways but not being bowed by the experience gave me the most pleasure.

DeleteCasablanca pretty much has a permanent spot in my top 5 favorite films, so it's great to see those wins for it. Yeah, Tierney is borderline, and she's actually my runner-up in the supporting category. I must watch The Hard Way (and The Gang's All Here). I nominate Carson for Mildred Pierce and Lupino for They Drive by Night, but I'd love to nominate them again.
