87th Oscar Nominations Announced

The Grand Budapest Hotel co-leads with 9 nominations.

The Oscar nominations brought a number of surprises this morning - some good (Marion Cotillard making the cut), some bad (The LEGO Movie missing), and some predictable, but no less shocking (Selma's two nominations). I gambled predicting too much support for Selma, and it cost me in several categories. Though, Nightcrawler also underperformed, while Foxcatcher and American Sniper proved to have plenty of support. I did call Morten Tyldum in Best Director, however, and I still wonder if The Imitation Game could give us another split this year, with Richard Linklater winning Director and the Weinstein film winning the big one. Or it could just go to Boyhood. Anyway, you can see how I did below.

  1. 77% is a pretty good effort, considering there were some surprise nominations!
I've seen Mr Turner and remember nothing about the music, whereas Gone Girl score was a big part of the experience. An odd choice by the Academy.
What happened to the Lego Movie? Granted it wasn't my cup of tea, but I thought it was a contender to win!

    1. Thanks. I actually did 5% better this year than I did last year. :)

Yeah, who saw Mr. Turner getting a score nod?

The animation branch of the Academy can be tricky. Maybe the live-action section of the film hurt it. Or maybe they just liked the animation of the other 5 films more.

  3. If only your predictions on SELMA had been right, Josh! I'm about to post my Oscar noms reaction and that's pretty much one of the biggest disappointments this year.

    1. Yeah, I wouldn't personally nominate Selma in categories like Picture, Director, or Actor, but I wish the Academy could've included the film more.
