Love the Karina double nods! For me, this year is all about Pierrot le Fou and it pretty much sweeps. I still have a lot to see though.
ReplyDeleteI really need to rewatch Pierrot le Fou, but I've been cramming for my year-end music posts this weekend. Pierrot is a close second right now, which is why I at least gave Godard a screenplay win.

ReplyDeleteBunny Lake Is Missing
Dr. Zhivago
The Flight of the Phoenix-Winner
Repulsion
Ship of Fools
Zhivago is an epic undertaking with some amazing visuals but it drags at times. Bunny Lake is an excellently constructed puzzler, Repulsion an unsettling study of the collapse of a troubled mind and my runner-up Ship of Fools a great microcosm of a disparate group but Phoenix with a similiar idea adds a life and death element making what at first seems a regular adventure flick into something special.
Director:
Robert Aldrich-The Flight of the Phoenix
Stanley Kramer-Ship of Fools
Roman Polanski-Repulsion-Winner
Otto Preminger-Bunny Lake Is Missing
William Wyler-The Collector
All the directors helmed their films expertly but none came close to the eerie dread Polanski instilled into his. I didn't care for Repulsion as an entertainment but what he and Deneuve did with the material is fascinating and chilling.
Actor:
Richard Burton-The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
Omar Sharif-Dr. Zhivago
Terence Stamp-The Collector
James Stewart-The Flight of the Phoenix
Oskar Werner-Ship of Fools-Winner
During his brief time at the top Werner gave several fine performances but his sympatheic, melancholy captain piloting the Ship of Fools is perhaps the most layered. Burton, in this most fruitful period of his career, is also terrific in Spy but he was my winner the previous year so I don't mind passing him over in favor of Oskar.
Actress:
Julie Christie-Darling
Bette Davis-The Nanny
Catherine Deneuve-Repulsion-Winner
Lee Remick-Baby, The Rain Must Fall
Simone Signoret-Ship of Fools
This was a tough field to choose from, a five way tie wouldn't be the worst result, and I hated to take Julie Christie's Oscar away but she'll be my winner at least twice in the future. I was mightly drawn to Lee Remick's deeply felt work in Baby, The Rain Must Fall but Catherine Deneuve is so extraordinary in Repulsion she had to take the prize.
Supporting Actor:
Richard Attenborough-The Flight of the Phoenix
Michael Dunn-Ship of Fools-Winner
Hardy Kruger-The Flight of the Phoenix
Walter Matthau-Mirage
Laurence Olivier-Bunny Lake Is Missing
I love Cat Ballou and I love Lee Marvin in it but an Oscar for that? No way, it should have gone to Michael Dunn who is sensational in Ship of Fools.
Supporting Actress:
Claire Bloom-The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
Barbara Harris-A Thousand Clowns
Vivien Leigh-Ship of Fools
Eleanor Parker-The Sound of Music-Winner
Maggie Smith-Othello
Vivien as always is exceptional in Ship but so is the great underappreciated Eleanor Parker as the Baroness. Since this was her last really worthwhile showcase and she does so much with it easy to chose her as my winner.
After I finished this year I realized it seems like I don't love The Sound of Music which I do, it and most of its cast was crowded out by some other fine films.
I love your winners. Michael Dunn is an interesting choice, and I really need to watch The Flight of the Phoenix. I have The Collector and Baby, the Rain Must Fall on hand, so hopefully I'll get to watch them soon.
