Oscar Oddity #14: One-Time Acting Lineups

Cathy Moriarty: Never nominated again.

The Academy loves to nominate a certain group of actors many times. It's always been that way, and it will likely never change. However, five acting lineups have actually featured first-time nominees and (to date) no return nominees. In other words, all of the actors in these five lineups have never been nominated again (so far). Check out the lineups below.

1927-28: Best Actor

Richard Barthelmess, The Noose and The Patent Leather Kid
Emil Jannings, The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh (winner)

1962: Best Supporting Actor

Ed Begley, Sweet Bird of Youth (winner)
Victor Buono, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
Telly Savalas, Birdman of Alcatraz
Omar Sharif, Lawrence of Arabia
Terence Stamp, Billy Budd

1980: Best Supporting Actress

Eileen Brennan, Private Benjamin
Eva Le Gallienne, Resurrection
Cathy Moriarty, Raging Bull
Diana Scarwid, Inside Moves
Mary Steenburgen, Melvin and Howard (winner)

1985: Best Supporting Actor

Don Ameche, Cocoon (winner)
Klaus Maria Brandauer, Out of Africa
William Hickey, Prizzi's Honor
Robert Loggia, Jagged Edge
Eric Roberts, Runaway Train

1987: Best Supporting Actress

Norma Aleandro, Gaby: A True Story
Anne Archer, Fatal Attraction
Olympia Dukakis, Moonstruck (winner)
Anne Ramsey, Throw Momma from the Train
Ann Sothern, The Whales of August

Note: The 1968 Best Supporting Actor lineup could be counted, but Gene Wilder was nominated for a writing Oscar a few years later. So, I ruled it out on a technicality.

This leads to another interesting statistic, which is that no Best Actress category has ever featured one-time nominees only, unless you count the first year (though, one of those actresses was nominated again). It's quite fascinating to me, but I'm not surprised, as I nominate a lot of the same actors many times as well.

  1. Isn't last year's Supporting Actor lineup the first time that five Oscar winners were nominated in the same category?
