Oscar Oddity #9: Argo's Best Picture Win

"And the stats just keep on comin'."

Throughout the past Oscar season, Argo's success has spawned many statistics and broken many rules. A lot has been made of Argo winning Best Picture without a Best Director nomination, making it the first film to do so since Driving Miss Daisy did over 20 years ago. But there's more to it than that.

One statistic that isn't mentioned is that Argo is also the only film to win 3 Oscars, including Best Picture, without a Best Director nod. Other Best Picture winners like Casablanca, The Godfather, and Midnight Cowboy have won only 3 awards, but they have all had that crucial Best Director nomination. So, in that regard, Argo broke new ground and currently stands alone.

  1. Also Clooney's nomination for producing the movie was another record, wasn't it? I mean the amount of different categories he was nominated in.

    1. Yep, he and Walt Disney are the only people nominated for six different categories. Guess Clooney's gonna have to start shooting, scoring or editing his own flicks now. Ha.

    2. Yeah, I've seen that stat around the web, so I didn't mention it here. I try to find ones that aren't talked about much, if at all. :)
