2012 Visual Effects Oscar Shortlist

Bond's 23rd outing is up for the Visual F/X Oscar.

The Academy has just released the ten films up for Best Visual Effects this year.  Of the ten selections, only five will be nominated. Of course, this list indicates that films like The Impossible and Looper will not be nominated in this category. Press release here.

Here's the list:

The Amazing Spider-Man
The Avengers
Cloud Atlas
The Dark Knight Rises
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
John Carter
Life of Pi
Prometheus
Skyfall
Snow White and the Huntsman

Note: It was also revealed earlier this month that 21 animated films have been submitted for Best Animated Feature Film. So, that means there will be five nominees in that category as well. Press release here.

    1. Haha. Yeah, I just commented on your post.

I hate that I didn't post on the Animated Feature news, so I included it here. I must've been saving that for an Oscar update post with a few news items bulked together.

    3. In good years for animation, 5 nominees are most welcome. I'm not sure if this is a "good" one though.

  2. No Looper? That's very weird. Glad to see Prometheus here!

    1. I can see why Looper didn't make the cut, but I'm surprised as well. And I think Prometheus will actually be nominated. Fingers crossed. :)

  3. I'm surprised about Looper not being in here either. Hopefully they're in for Make Up.

On a side note, I didn't realize anyone had even screened The Hobbit yet.

    1. Actually, I don't think Looper will get any Oscar nominations.

Regarding The Hobbit, I think the studio just submitted footage spotlighting the visual effects to the Academy.

  4. Interesting list. I liked the effects in Looper, but they weren't as bombastic as some of these. Here's my predictions for what gets nominated from this group:

    The Avengers
    Cloud Atlas
    The Dark Knight Rises
    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
    Prometheus

I ended up with six likely contenders, so I had to drop Skyfall to make five. Lots of good choices.

    1. Good predictions. I'm predicting Life of Pi, which I also think will win, instead of The Dark Knight Rises.
