2017 CinSpec Awards

Blade Runner 2049 leads with 12 nominations.

Since I first posted these in March, I've finally seen films like You Were Never Really Here, Zama, Let the Sunshine In, and The Death of Stalin. Here's my updated ballot, and I'll try to get an updated 2012 one ready soon. Also, I updated my 2016 ballot, as I have a new Best Picture winner that year.

  1. I will go to my grave screaming that War for the Planet of the Apes should've won Visual Effects this year. lol

  2. LOVE these picks. Phantom Thread, all day long. But you're including You Were Never Really Here for 2017? That's my top film of 2018 so far, but I go by US theatrical release dates. I know it gets a little weird when they premiere at festivals first though, especially Cannes one year before the theatrical release.

    1. Thanks man. I'm going by original theatrical release date (excluding festivals) now, and You Were Never Really Here was released in countries like France and Spain last year. So, it's in 2017 for me. It's weird doing it that way with new years, but for past ones it's easier.

  3. I agree Sacred Deer was overlooked and yes Phantom Thread should have won for score! Did you happen to watch Robert Pattinson in Good Time? He's my winner for 2017 though Day-Lewis is great too. For me, two other underrated lead performances are Dar Salim in Darkland (aka Underverden) and Andy Serkis in War for the Planet of the Apes.

    1. Pattinson fell out of my lineup. He used to be in there. LOVE him in Good Time. I haven't seen Darkland. I might have to give it a look.
