Catching Up

Hey guys.

Hello everyone! In an effort to get things back on track on the blog, here’s a list of 10 personal movie-related things from 2018 to catch you up on. I’ll try to duck in here more often, since I miss blogging, and have been watching a lot of movies this year. Expect an updated 2013 CinSpec Awards ballot soon. I’ve postponed it for ages, but I’m almost ready to post it. I also have a few big updates to 2016 to make, though I’ll just edit the last post I did of them. Anyways, I guess I’m back, so I’ll see you around.

1. Some of my favorite 2018 films so far include First Reformed, Black Panther, Annihilation, BlacKkKlansman, and Mission: Impossible - Fallout.

2. Sicario: Day of the Soldado is better than Sicario. (And I love Emily Blunt.)

3. Alicia Vikander gives an award-worthy performance in Tomb Raider.

4. Solo: A Star Wars Story flopped, but I loved it. Saw it twice in theaters.

5. Tulip Fever is perfectly watchable, even if it isn’t a great film.

6. I have now seen all but 15 of the films ever nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.

7. The Breaking Point is a masterpiece, as is A Little Romance.

8. I rewatched Mamma Mia! before seeing the sequel, and they’re both so much FUN.

9. Among others, The Death of Stalin and You Were Never Really Here will be on my updated 2017 ballot (coming soon).

10. I rewatched movies like 20th Century Women, Ordinary People, Wonder Boys, and The African Queen - all were better than I remembered.

  1. Ordinary People is so well acted and the confrontation scene (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_SfD5cdrnwis) is really powerful.

I loved Fallout. Hated You Were Never Really Here lol (I'm in the minority I know) which to me is a poor man's Taxi Driver. Part of a worrying trend of rehashing the classics.

Haven't yet seen Solo: A Star Wars Story, what did you love about it?

Anyway, nice to see you back! Look forward to new posts.

    1. Thanks, Chris! Spoiler alert: Ordinary People is now my #1 film of 1980. (I'd still give Scorsese Best Director though.) I forgot how - to use your word - powerful that film is.

Fallout is AWESOME. I've seen You Were Never Really Here once, but I want to revisit it. I keep thinking about it, which is usually a good sign. Taxi Driver is due for a rewatch too, actually.

Solo was a ride. Good cast, great below-the-line work, and just a really fun time. I see why it was dismissed as an unnecessary film, but I would've liked to revisit the characters in two more films, which won't happen now.

  2. You're alive! :)

First Reformed is getting a lot of buzz, but I really didn't care for that ending.

    1. I am! :)

That ending...shocked me. In a good way, I think.

  3. How Sicario 2 is better then 1 I DO NOT understand but it doesn’t matter as long as you’re back! :)

  4. Welcome back! Day of the Soldado got crapped on so hard the weekend it came out, but I really enjoyed it. And I'm so happy you like You Were Never Really Here. I adored that film and it will absolutely be in my Top 10 of this year.

    1. Thanks man! I LOVED Day of the Soldado. I think Benicio is even better in the sequel. You Were Never Really Here is terrific. Stoked for your top 10 in a few months.
