1939 CinSpec Awards

During the past few weeks, I've watched over twenty new 1939 films, and here is my updated ballot with images and a PDF. I've linked it on the CinSpec Awards page, and I've updated the Acting Nominations Database accordingly.

  1. OH
    MY
    GOD!!!

Love Beau Geste getting so much love. Love your Supporting Actor ballot SO MUCH. Renoir was like, 6th for me. KAY FRANCIS!!! So many days I wish I had nominated her! Gabin! Carne! MIDNIGHT!!!

I love that you break down how many noms each film gets. I've been thinking of doing that too...somewhere...but that's SO MUCH WORK!

    1. My Supporting Actor lineup is one of my all-time faves. And Francis is brilliant!

Haha, you should totally break down the noms! ;) It's worth it.

  2. Great lineups and the artwork is wonderful.

I'm not sure but I think it was Margaret Hamilton that took the fall out of your Supporting Actress lineup and sorry to see that because she's truly wonderful in Oz but Kay Francis would be my winner so YEA that she's now is one of your noms. So brilliant.

Rules of the Game is my major blind spot in this year. I've been trying to see it, its been in my queue for some time but it's on a long wait and TCM hasn't shown it lately, frustrating but hopefully soon.

Love that Cagney is one of your picks for Roaring Twenties, between he and Gladys George they walk away with the picture.

Can't argue with Wizard of Oz taking the Visual Effects award but I'm glad to see The Rains Came in your line-up, it's effects are truly dazzling for the time.

    1. Thanks!

Crawford and Francis replaced Hamilton and McDaniel, but I really wanted to nominate Rosalind Russell as well.

Hope you get to see The Rules of the Game soon. It starts a little slow, but I was hooked by the end.

Cagney is one of my favorite classic actors, and he's SO good in The Roaring Twenties, as is George.

Yeah, The Rains Came deserved that Oscar win. The effects are pretty great.

  3. Loving the Wizard of Oz love, even though it is the only film from this lineup I've really seen. But I'm a little surprised to see no Margaret Hamilton for Best Supporting Actress. She sends me chills every time I see that movie.

Good stuff, though! Keep up the good work!

    1. The Wizard of Oz is a classic, but it's not quite in my top 5. Hamilton barely missed my lineup, actually. She's either #6 or #7.

      Thanks man!

  4. I've only seen GWTW and MSGTW, hmmmm I'm torn between Gable and Stewart as both were excellent in their leading roles. Vivien Leigh was superb as Scarlett, such an iconic performance, especially impressive as she's a Brit playing an American Southerner.

    1. Glad you've seen those classics, Ruth. Gable and Leigh are both worthy of wins, but I've always been more impressed by Stewart's star-making performance than Gable's strong work in GWTW.

  5. Gotta be The Rules of the Game, for sure. Couldn't agree more.

  6. I admire Rules of the Game, but its not a film I Iove, although I do think the rabbit hunt scene is masterful in how it's an allegory for the senseless death that occurs during war.
I'm a big fan of Mr Smith, and great to see a few of your overlooked films made an impact in the award categories!

    1. Yeah, The Rules of the Game can be divisive, especially given its lofty reputation. Glad to hear you're a fan of Mr. Smith, too. I'd recommend any of those overlooked films! ;)
