This whole year is a giant blind spot for me. I've been meaning to watch The Magnificent Ambersons forever. Same goes for Cat People since the remake is just so bad its awesome. Thanks for the reminders.

ReplyDeleteI love Garson's performance in Mrs. Miniver, but I wish she'd won for Random Harvest instead. Glad to hear you're a fan of that performance too. I need to check out more of Lake's work as well, as I've only seen a few of her films.

DeleteI'm very curious about Mrs. Miniver as a friend recommended it to me after I saw Greer Garson in The Valley of Decision (w/ Greg Peck of course). I have so many I haven't seen from this year.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Miniver is a good one, Ruth! I used to give it more nominations before I saw more films from this year, but it's still in my top 10 at #9 right now. :)
DeleteWhen I stumbled across 1941 I hadn't realized you had done so many years. I'll never catch up but I'll have a good time trying! I decided to start with the 40's since that's my favorite movie period, followed by the 70's.

As beautifully shot as Ambersons is and as good a film it is I've always preferred the deceptively dark/light of To Be or Not to Be with Sullivan's just behind.

A very rich field and while I admire them all, especially the way Wilder made material that no one today would even touch light and charming, my vote would still have to go with Lubitsch for the difficult juggling act that is To Be or Not to Be.

The Pied Piper with Wooley is one film that has always eluded me but your including him makes me want to see the film even more. I also hated to leave off Jack Benny, he was my sixth choice, but even if he had made the cut Joel McCrea and his effortless work would still take the prize.

During her regrettably short time at the top '42 was undoubtedly Veronica's best year. Three great performances but this is her best, she's sly, vulnerable, funny and glows like the sun. Her performance, especially her seemingly total infatuation with Fredric March, is even more impressive if you know they loathed each other off screen. My second choice would be Davis's great work although I love Lucy's commitment to her character's venality never once trying to engender the audience's sympathy.

All five performances are terrific but for me Travers, so gently touching in his few scenes, conveys what Mr. Ballard's life is about with minimal screen time he just seemed a bit more fleshed out than the others.

Again fine work from all, especially Sheridan in a whirling dervish of a performance, but I think Agnes Moorehead's work here is one of the best performances from anybody ever, I'll never understand how she lost.

DeleteAwesome ballot! To Be or Not to Be is a great choice, and I'm thrilled to see a nomination for Garson's performance in Random Harvest. I was close to nominating Woolley for The Man Who Came to Dinner, but his performance in The Pied Piper stuck with me more. Sheridan is great in the former as well, though I couldn't resist nominating her for her strong work in Kings Row. I really need to watch I Married a Witch.
