Hoop Dreams is probably my favorite doc! I think it's the only one to get an editing nom, but I can't say for sure. At least Steve James did get a nomination for it in editing.

YAY! Haha, they certainly gave me an idea on some films I really needed (and still do need) to see. Actually, I'd seen all of your supporting lineups except Schell and Lisi. Robbins was the only lead nominee I'd seen. ;)

DeleteA much better year than '93 with a wider range of choices which I think our lists show. I've always found Pulp Fiction a divisive title, you either love it or hate it, I'm in the latter camp. I loathed it on my first view but so many people seemed to love it I gave it another chance and it was even worse! The academy's wholesale love for Forrest Gump is another mystery I'll never get. I really need to see the Three Colors films.

Two engaging comedies, a fine historical drama and an oddly charming prison fable but the vast canvas of Legends while sometimes tipping over into the melodramatic was the film that seemed to have the most texture this year.

Fall is a sweeping melodrama loaded with grandeur, recrimination, remorse, sorrow and great expansive cinematography, Zwick's steady sure handed direction keeps it compelling throughout.

Jack Thompson-The Sum of Us-Winner
Some really great work, Hawthorne and Stamp in particular do brilliant things with their characters, but my vote goes to Thompson who without a lot of flash invests his open and accepting father in Sum of Us with warmth, humor and an easy naturalness.

Adjani is superior as usual in Queen Margot, Turner wonderfully demented in Serial Mom and Winslet and Lynskey are truly Heavenly but Linda Fiorentino is ferocious in Last Seduction, shamelessly and unrepentedly evil, a fine inheritor of the noir crown.

The other men are excellent, in particular Crowe in a part that is almost a co-lead, but like his co-star Scott-Thomas Hannah finds all the gold in his character and plays it for all it's worth.

A strong field with Wiest's Helen Sinclair an easy winner any other year and the proper winner in her field at the Oscars but I favor two other performances more. I'd love to hand the recently departed Virni Lisi this for her brilliant work in Queen Margot but Kristen Scott-Thomas's work in Four Weddings is so varied and perfectly played in every instance she had to be the winner.
Hope you get to see the Three Colors trilogy soon. I'd love to her your thoughts on those films.
DeleteI used to be more found of Legends of the Fall, but it's a bit too melodramatic for me now. Love the mentions of Heavenly Creatures, Four Weddings and The Sum of Us. I liked Thompson and Crowe a lot in the latter, but not enough to nominate them. Fiorentino is marvelous, and she's my runner-up. Great to see King George, Shawshank and Bullets in your Best Picture lineup as well.
Well disagree with "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". That song is a 4 chords song. And that takes away from it.
