I'm really shocked that none of the Brokeback Mountain actors even got nominations!
ReplyDeleteWe go 4/5 in Lead Actress!!! I hate when people say that this was a horrible year for Lead Actresses because I love my entire top 12, and I consider my Top 5 one of the strongest of the decade!
And we have the same BP/BD winners! Cache is amazing.
While I admire the film and the performances, I've always found Brokeback a bit overrated. I do like it. I just don't love it. That said, Michelle Williams was in the running (along with Ziyi Zhang and ScarJo). Heath Ledger probably wouldn't even make my top 10, but I like his performance. It seems I'm on my own regarding Brokeback. :/

DeleteLOVE, LOVE Batman Begins, I dare say I put that ahead of The Dark Knight. Oooh you got me intrigued by Caché, I just saw what it's about. That'll be my intro to Haneke. I saw an awful movie by Daniel Auteuil last year, but I think he's a talented French actor.

DeleteMichelle Williams was one of my runners-up for the fifth spot. I like Ledger's and Gyllenhaal's performances too, but I don't love them like most people.
The Libertine is kind of filthy. Even the cinematography makes it look dirty. Still, it's worth seeing for Depp's performance as John Wilmot, the English poet who led a wild life and died of syphilis. It also has good supporting performances by Samantha Morton and Rosamund Pike. The haunting score by Michael Nyman is also great. I nominated a song from it, since I couldn't fit it into Best Original Score. You might want to check out the prologue clip. It's literally the first scene in the film, and it's only 2 minutes. I have a mini sweep this year even though there were several fine films, not however that piece of crap that won the actual Oscar, Crash, but nothing as good to me as Brokeback Mountain. We seem rather far apart this year except for Pride & Prejudice which I think is terrific too.

The change of locale seemed to energize Woody and Match Point was his freshest film in several years. Cronenberg and Miller did strong jobs with their films and again if not for Brokeback Wright's guiding of P&P couldn't have been beaten but Lee conquers yet another genre, he's my favorite contemporary director.

Honorable mention-Matthew MacFayden's subtle and overlooked work in Pride & Prejudice.
I thought Walk the Line was overrated though I enjoyed it but Phoenix's work was very strong. Likewise with Good Luck and Strathairn. Hoffman was estimable in Capote going beyond mere impersonization to reveal that troubled man's twisted soul. I was really torn between the two leads of Brokeback but Heath's internalized pain won out.

While I love the other three, particularly Keira in P&P, this was between Joan Allen's wonderfully unhinged work in Upside of Anger and Rachel Weisz in Constant Gardner. I thought Weisz gave the best female performance of the year so I'm glad she was rewarded but her win in supporting is ridiculous. Hers is the story engine that makes the film run.

Giamatti, Harris and Hopkins do well by their roles but my choice came down between two performances that were ignored this year. All the acting is superior in P&P but Hollander's portrait of that fusty little fart Mr. Collins nails that pretentious toad perfectly, he's my runner up but Clifton Collins work as Perry Smith is so powerful, I was mystified how it was totally ignored for awards recognition at the time but he's my winner.

Four admirable performances but Williams's turn as the initially insecure turned bitter and betrayed Alma is so beautifully done she was an easy choice for the win.
I liked Brokeback Mountain more when I first saw it, but it didn't hold up for me on repeat viewings. I do still like the film now, though I don't love it. That said, I love that you give Ledger and Williams those wins. Williams was close to making my lineup, but my Best Actor lineup was way too crowded for Ledger.
DeleteIt's nice to see Match Point, A History of Violence and Pride and Prejudice get so many noms. That Giamatti nom is awesome too. I couldn't fit Capote anywhere, but I like that film as well.
