September Oscar Predictions

Will 12 Years a Slave really be this awards season's Schindler's List?

Well, it was fun while it lasted. Since my last predictions, several Oscar contenders have been bumped to 2014, dropping out of this year's race. Among those to vacate 2013 are Foxcatcher, The Wolf of Wall Street (unofficially), Grace of Monaco and The Immigrant. With that in mind, 12 Years a Slave might be the one to beat, even if early frontrunner status doesn't always lead to Oscar wins. Gravity will be a threat, though. In other news, Fruitvale Station and The Counselor are virtually dead in the Oscar race, and Nebraska and Lee Daniels' The Butler could get a few nominations. Also, I've added specific Best Foreign Language Film predictions, as the submissions list is quite long now.

Note: I'm taking The Wolf of Wall Street out, but it will be back in my predictions if the film doesn't get delayed after all.

  1. Fruitvale will be back friend. It only appears dead because it's months old and people are talking about the new. Don't forget, this has Weinstein and it is his BEST shot this year for major Oscar attention, so he will pimp the hell out of this come awards season.

    1. I hope so, but it seems dead at the moment. Still, you're right: Weinstein will campaign heavily. I'm just not sure it will stick.

    1. Yeah, I hope Scorsese can finish Wolf for a late December release. Dying to see that film, and 12 Years, of course.

  3. I think your Best Picture prediction is pretty spot on Josh. I can't imagine not seeing 12 Years a Slave and Gravity on the list. Wow Nebraska too? I'm looking forward to seeing that on TCFF opening night!

    1. Yeah, I think Nebraska might find its way in there as well, especially if the performances and screenplay get nominated.

  4. Matthew McConaughey deserves his first oscar nom, so many good performances by him the last 2-3 years.
Just saw Blue Jasmine, and agree Cate Blanchett should be nominated.
Before I forget, like the new Kieslowski header :)

    1. I'd like to see him nominated, and the performance definitely looks worthy.

Blanchett is still my winner for Best Actress. I hope I feel the same at the end of the year.

      Thanks! :)

    1. Same here. I'm starting to believe in a nod for Deakins, but Best Picture is tough.
