Ballot Update: I decided to move Wild Strawberries from my 1959 ballot to my 1957 one, so I've made some changes to them.

  1. Yay! for Notorious. I would give it everything as well but I haven't seen a lot of these films.

Of those you haven't seen, I saw No Regrets of Our Youth some time ago. If nothing else, it was definitely worth for Setsuko Hara's performance. Check it out when you can.

    1. Yay! Glad we agree on Notorious.

I'll definitely check out No Regrets for Our Youth. :)

  2. Love your acting wins! I think ours would match up 100% ATM, although I do love me some Vickers and often swap out Bacall with her.

    1. Thanks man! I hope most of your winners stay the same, but Vickers would also be a worthy winner.

  3. Somehow I knew 'It's a Wonderful Life' is gonna be all over your ballot and I concur!! :D

  4. O.K., I have got to see Notorious. BTW, I love It's a Wonderful Life too. The basic message, that "ordinary" lives have great meaning, never gets old for me.

    1. Notorious is one of my favorite Hitchcock films, so I'd recommend it regardless of its wins. Yeah, It's a Wonderful Life is just so wholesome, but in a (forgive me) wonderful way.

    2. That's a good way of describing it. :-)

  5. Hey, I've always wondered this (and sorry if you've mentioned it before), but how do you pick which years you're going to cover on any given day? Is it just which ever one pops into your head? Genuinely just curious!

And yeah, Notorious reigns. What a classic film, one of Hitch's best.

    1. No problem man. I'm working my way from the 30's to the 00's backwards and forwards, if you will. Since I haven't seen many films from the early 30's, I started at the end of that decade and worked my way to the 00's one decade a week. So, I went by the 9's ('39-'09), then the 8's ('38-'08), then the 7's ('37-'07), and so on. The idea was to give myself plenty of time to catch up on early 30's and 40's releases, but I end up catching up on relevant releases for each week's ballot. The early 30's will probably be weak ballots until I'm finished and can focus on them more. Long explanantion, but hope that makes sense. :)

Glad you dig Notorious as well.

  7. What a rich year in cinema. Every category had at least one film or performance that I had to leave off and in some their were multiple choices. That's a great circumstance that I wish would happen more often.

    Picture:
    Beauty and the Beast
The Best Years of Our Lives
    It's a Wonderful Life
    Notorious-Winner
    The Spiral Staircase
This was so tight for me between Notorious and Best Years but Years drags ever so slightly here and there and Notorious never does so it's my winner.
In the running: My Darling Clementine, The Stranger and Great Expectations.

    Director:
    Frank Capra-It's a Wonderful Life
    Jean Cocteau-Beauty and the Beast
    Alfred Hitchcock-Notorious-Winner
    Robert Siodmak-The Spiral Staircase
William Wyler-The Best Years of Our Lives
Best Years is a masterworks for Wyler as B&B is for Cocteau and Siodmak had an extraordinary year with Staircase in addition to The Killers and It's a Wonderful Life is pure Capra at his best but Hitch keeps the reins pulled tight on Notorious and never lets up.
In the running: John Ford for My Darling Clementine.

    Actor:
Dana Andrews-The Best Years of Our Lives
    Henry Fonda-My Darling Clementine
John Garfield-The Postman Always Rings Twice
    Cary Grant-Notorious-Winner
    Laurence Olivier-Henry V
The other three actors are super but this was between Andrews and Grant and while this is one of Andrews's best I think it's Cary's top performance out of his many excellent ones throughout his career.
In the running: Orson Welles for The Stranger and Fredric March-Best Years of Our Lives

    Actress:
    Ingrid Bergman-Notorious-Winner
    Joan Crawford-Humoresque
Olivia de Havilland-To Each His Own
    Rita Hayworth-Gilda
    Dorothy McGuire-The Spiral Staircase
There were so many great contenders that this was the toughest category for me to get down to just five. Even with all the fine work it wasn't hard to hand the prize to Ingrid for her brilliant performance of the complicated Alicia Huberman.
In the running: Josette Day-Beauty & the Beast, Laraine Day-The Locket, Susan Hayward-Deadline at Dawn, Deborah Kerr-I See a Dark Stranger, Rosalind Russell-Sister Kenny, Barbara Stanwyck-The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, Gene Tierney-The Razor's Edge and Lana Turner-The Postman Always Rings Twice

    Supporting Actor:
    Lionel Barrymore-It's a Wonderful Life
    Victor Mature-My Darling Clementine
    Vincent Price-Dragonwyck
    Claude Rains-Notorious-Winner
Harold Russell-The Best Years of Our Lives
Clementine is Mature's career best, Price entertainingly bizarre, Russell deeply touching and Barrymore the very picture of a twisted soul but as with his castmates Rains imbues his part with that little something extra that lifts him above and into the winner's slot.
In the running: Kirk Douglas-Strange Love of Martha Ivers, George Macready-Gilda, Claude Rains-Deception (if I hadn't chosen him for Notorious this would have been my winner) and Clifton Webb-The Razor's Edge

    Supporting Actress:
    Anne Baxter-The Razor's Edge
    Leopoldine Konstantin-Notorious
Myrna Loy-The Best Years of Our Lives-Winner
Virginia Mayo-The Best Years of Our Lives
    Donna Reed-It's a Wonderful Life
Another heavily crowded field and with a closer decision than in the actress category. I adore Madame Konstantin's rendering of the monsterous Mme. Sebastian, so evil she doesn't even rate a first name! Donna Reed's supportive Mary and Virginia's rapacious tramp Marie are polar opposites of the wife role both expertly played but it came down to Anne Baxter's sadly broken Sophie and Myrna's almost superhuman Millie. I went with Myrna because resolute patience and decency is harder to play than dipsomania no matter how well it's done.
In the running: Ethel Barrymore-The Spiral Staircase, Ava Gardner-The Killers, Gloria Grahame-It's a Wonderful Life, Martita Hunt-Great Expectations, Martha Vickers-The Big Sleep and Teresa Wright-The Best Years of Our Lives

    1. I LOVE your winners, and the acting nominees I've seen are all wonderful. Cary Grant actually just missed my Best Actor lineup, but I'm surprised that James Stewart missed a nomination.

    2. Oops! Don't know how I missed Jimmy Stewart, I probably would have switched Olivier and he and put Larry into contention but I guess that proves what a substantial year it was.

    3. Yeah, it was a great year, and one of my favorites for cinema.
