    1. Knew you'd love that.

Really? Haha, I had to scramble just to see most of the Best Picture nominees I could track down and a couple of others.

    1. Yeah, the songs are great, as is the film. Snow White actually just missed a Best Picture nomination. :)

I will. It will be odd accepting a Wordpress award, though. ;)

  3. I'm a little surprised by all the awards you gave to The Awful Truth. I'm going to have to give it another look, I liked it but it didn't bowl me over when I watched it.

    Picture:
    Dead End
    Make Way for Tomorrow
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
    Stage Door-Winner
    A Star is Born
I'm not much of an animation fan but Snow White was so revolutionary in its day and so well made I think it belongs here. All the films are excellent but Stage Door is a perfect example of the way a multi character story should work.

    Director:
    Gregory La Cava-Stage Door-Winner
    Mitchell Leisen-Easy Living
    Leo McCarey-Make Way for Tomorrow
    William Wellman-A Star is Born
    William Wyler-Dead End
La Cava, with the assist of an unbelievable cast, makes you invest in the lives and struggles of all women in the Footlights Club. He was smart enough to listen to the actresses chatting during set-ups and incorporated the essence of that talk to make the film more real, something only a strong, clever director would do.

    Actor:
    Cary Grant-The Awful Truth
    Fredric March-A Star is Born-Winner
    Robert Montgomery-Night Must Fall
    Victor Moore-Make Way for Tomorrow
Paul Muni-The Life of Emile Zola
We match! It was great to see Victor Moore who was always in support get a chance at the lead in Tomorrow and his work is exceptional. Still my choice is March's fallen star, he's able to convey both Norman Maine's uniqueness and his tragic flaws without a lot of showiness.

    Actress:
    Beulah Bondi-Make Way for Tomorrow
    Luise Rainer-The Good Earth
    Ginger Rogers-Stage Door
    Sylvia Sidney-Dead End
    Barbara Stanwyck-Stella Dallas-Winner
Whereas I thought Rainer was undeserving the previous year her work in The Good Earth even with her miscasting is very graceful, the best thing in that film. As with Moore it was great to see Beulah Bondi spotlighted in a lead which she plays beautifully. All the women in Stage Door were nomination worthy but Rogers managed to shine just a bit brighter than the rest. Sidney conveys that wonderful mixture of grit and vulnerability that was uniquely hers. Even though the film Stella Dallas is a hoary old chestnut what never gets old is Stanwyck's completely committed work as Stella. If for nothing else she should have won the Oscar for that last scene alone.

    Supporting Actor:
    Edward Arnold-Easy Living
    Humphrey Bogart-Dead End
Douglas Fairbanks Jr.-The Prisoner of Zenda
    Thomas Mitchell-Make Way for Tomorrow
    Roland Young-Topper-Winner
Again all excellent work but Roland Young's Topper is just that.

    Supporting Actress:
    Constance Cummings-Stage Door
    Isabel Jewell-Marked Woman
    Anne Shirley-Stella Dallas
    Claire Trevor-Dead End
    Dame May Whitty-Night Must Fall-Winner
This was between two very different performances, Isabel Jewell's unstrung Emmy Lou and Dame May Whitty's somewhat dotty Mrs. Bramson. Jewell has the flashier role which she modulates well but Dame May hits all the proper notes in a tricky role.

    1. I've seen The Awful Truth many times, and it remains one of my favorite screwball comedies. I even prefer it to Bringing Up Baby.

I didn't get a chance to see Stage Door before I posted these, but I'm dying to see it! We're pretty close on most of our nominees, though. Young just missed my Supporting Actor lineup, and Snow White just missed in Best Picture. Interestingly, this is currently the ONLY time I nominate William Wyler for Best Director, unlike the Academy.
