2016 Blind Spot Series

The River (dir. Jean Renoir)

For the fourth straight year, I've decided to participate in the Blind Spot Series, which is hosted by Ryan McNeil at The Matinee. I'll watch one film every month, and write a brief post with my thoughts. Check out my list for next year below.

The Love Parade (1929)

Way Out West (1937)

The Stranger (1946)

The River (1951)

Journey to Italy (1954)

The Great Silence (1968)

The Day of the Jackal (1973)

Burden of Dreams (1982)

NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

Benny’s Video (1992)

Jindabyne (2006)

This Is Not A Film (2012)

  1. Of the films in that list, I've seen 4 of these. Journey to Italy I think is one of the finest films from Roberto Rossellini. The River is quintessential Renoir, The Stranger I think is really good. Burden of Dreams is a classic while I would pair that with Fitzcarraldo.

    1. Looking forward to all of them. I've seen Fitzcarraldo, but I might rewatch it when I see Burden of Dreams.

  5. Great Silence is a good one. I love Morricone's score and the Alpine setting, and the ending will stay with you for a long time.

  6. I've only seen four of these...Love Parade, The Stranger, Journey to Italy and Day of the Jackal.

Of those my favorite by far is Day of the Jackal which was a crackling great thriller. I like Journey to Italy more for the performances of Ingrid and George Sanders but it's a decent film although of the Bergman/Rossellini films I prefer Fear to this. The other two are worthwhile films, anxious to read your take on them.

Of the others Jindabyne and Burden of Dreams have been on my to see list for years I'll have to make sure to catch them soon.

Not familiar with the others, except the Laurel and Hardy who I'm not an enormous fan of, I'll have to check them out.

    1. Oh, I still need to see Fear as well. Can't wait to see those you mentioned. Ha, I really should've seen them by now.

I LOVE Lantana, so Jindabyne is one I'm highly anticipating. The same goes for Burden of Dreams, as I'm a fan of Fitzcarraldo.

I've never seen a Laurel and Hardy film, so I figured one of their most famous ones was a good place to start.

  7. I've seen 6 of 12, hope you like most of them! My favorites are Benny’s Video and obviously Jackal-which is in my top 100. The snowy landscapes of The Great Silence (1968) remind me of The Hateful Eight.
