Final Oscar Predictions

The Shape of Water is poised to lead the nominations.

While I didn't post much last year, it's been a fun award season, and I'm glad to participate in Shane's Oscar contest again. This year I've actually seen most of the major films already, except for I, Tonya, which I'll be seeing later this week. I'm sure we're in for a surprise tomorrow when the nominations are announced, so I've gone out on a limb or two in a few categories. (I was THIS close to adding Darkest Hour in Best Picture.) Here's my last stab at predicting the nominees. Good luck, everyone.

  1. I'm rooting for The Square. A Fantastic Woman or In the Fade probably stand a better chance of winning though. Thelma is Joachim Trier's 4th film and he's overdue a nom, but it's horror and I know the Academy usually don't go for that.

Disappointing my #1 of the year (Killing of a Sacred Deer) and #2(Good Time) are not in contention. Robert Pattinson and Barry Keoghan deserve acting noms for those.

    1. I liked The Square, but I'd vote for A Fantastic Woman. (Not seen The Insult or On Body and Soul.)

Yes! Those guys were amazing. Love the films too.

  2. The lack of Blade Runner hurts so bad but also hope what's her face for mudbound gets nommed for cinematography :)

  3. These look good, I hope you're right. Although I wish someone would nominate Rob Morgan for Mudbound FFS. Or Dee Rees for directing.

  4. Some good calls! I was a bit surprised by some of the nominees but others seem to fall right in line with what's been happening all awards season. I am thrilled with Phantom Thread's big showing this morning.

    1. Sorry, your comment was hidden away in my spam folder. I thought Phantom Thread could surprise, but I never dreamed it would do THAT well. :)

  5. Great call on Manville. I didn't think she was going to make the cut. Real shame The Florida Project didn't have a better showing. That movie did so well with critics, but mass audiences just don't seem to remember it.

    1. I thought Phantom Thread could possibly get a surprise nomination or two, but I never would've guessed it would get in Picture and Director. I'm overjoyed! Yeah, The Florida Project almost got shutout, sadly. So glad I managed to see it in theaters.
