Since last month, Jackie has emerged as a serious contender, especially for Best Actress. Loving seems all but invisible right now, and The Birth of a Nation is fading fast. La La Land and Live By Night are probably my two most anticipated films this year (I even downloaded the audiobook last night lol). I dunno why but everything this year doesn't feel like it has the same caliber as last year :/

DeleteLoving feels like it's actually coming back, with the warm reception at TIFF and those reviews. Sure, it wasn't a passionate response, but the reviews are stellar and I feel like it's one of those films that will resonate with AMPAS members where it counts. I think it's a fringe BP contender and has a serious shot in Actor and Screenplay with Negga in the top 7 for Actress.

Loving just feels so Indie Spirits (and not much else) to me at this point. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

ReplyDeleteWell the only one I've seen is Birth of a Nation, which was good considering it's Nate Parker's debut but I can only see it getting a Best Picture nod.
I'll be seeing Moonlight at TCFF later this month. I'm still hoping LOVING would gain traction come award season. I've enjoyed what Jeff Nichols' done so far.

DeleteI've no idea what to make of The Birth of a Nation...at this point, I could see it missing the Oscars entirely. Maybe it'll come back around when the awards season really kicks in.

Great work. I agree than The Birth of a Nation is fading fast. I can't see it staying around come awards time. I'm really curious to see Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. The trailers don't really do much for me, but it has a lot of buzz surrounding it.
