American Honey getting a Screenplay nod would be so awesome!
ReplyDeleteAlso, our Best Supporting Actor predictions are the same except I have Ben Mendelsohn instead of Jovan Adepo.
American Honey feels like a film the writers' branch could go for, though it might not be an Academy type of film.

ReplyDeleteI have a feeling it could contend for Score as well. SPC picked it up after RAVES at Cannes and I bet they'll go full throttle. From what I can see, looks like it had the best reviews of any film there, outside of maybe the Ade, and nearly every review mentions the score being instrumental. It's a silent film, so think The Artist and how important that score was.
It could...win.
Ehh...I'm not sure on Score. Sylvain Chomet failed to get one for The Illusionist, which was a similar scenario. :/
DeleteThis year's line-up of Oscar hopefuls actually strikes me as kinda...underwhelming on paper. Like, I can't say I'm actually excited for any of these films apart from Silence and Manchester By the Sea.
ReplyDeleteDavid Michod's War Machine and Denis Villeueve's Story of My Life are two films I'm actually really excited for which I hope are Oscar contenders. Ben Affleck's Live By Night could be a major contender too, for me. Since the studio moved it's release date to January which could mean an Oscar qualifying run.
Denzel Washington for Best Director seems like a long-shot to me since Fences is going to be directed more like a stage play, plus, I'm not sure he can nab both Acting and Directing noms.
Silence and Manchester by the Sea are high on most anticipated list. Fences, La La Land and Loving could be brilliant, though I'm trying to keep my expectations down.
DeleteI'm not convinced that War Machine and Arrival (formerly Story of My Life) will be Oscar contenders, but I'm also looking forward to them. Not sure what to make of Live By Night. I love Affleck's previous directorial work, though.
Fences seems like one of those films that could be in the top 5 for Best Picture. If the Academy really loves it, I think he could sneak in, like Tyldum for The Imitation Game and Daldry for The Reader.
