November Oscar Predictions

Is The Martian bound for more than a few nominations?

Not much has changed since last month's predictions, but the awards season is upon us. The Martian has done very well at the box office, and word of mouth is solid. It could potentially be Ridley Scott's welcome back to the Oscars. The Hateful Eight, JoyThe Revenant, and (possibly) The Big Short remain the big question marks, while early contenders like Carol and The Danish Girl seem to be destined for acting and below-the-line recognition only. Meanwhile, the rest of the field is becoming more solidified, but I wonder what will happen with Inside Out. Check out my up-to-date predictions below.

  1. Nice work. I've seen a few Oscar pundits on Twitter (Scott Feinberg for one) saying that Ridley Scott is the frontrunner for Best Director. I liked the Martian, but that surprises me. What do you think?

    1. Thanks! I'd say Scott could very well get a nomination, but I wouldn't call him the frontrunner at all. Though, maybe Bridge of Spies will be seen as another Lincoln, and The Martian is this year's Argo. (Assuming that Bridge of Spies has a slight lead in the race right now.)

  2. I've read in a few places that there is a building groundswell of support for Charlotte Rampling to FINALLY score a nod for her work in 45 Years. Hope that it happens, I can't see her winning but a nomination to at least acknowledge her awesomeness would be wonderful.

    1. Oh, I'd LOVE for her to be nominated! Maybe she'll take Mulligan's spot.

  3. I've seen 45 Years and the performances are strong, so like Joel in the comments,I could well see it achieve a nom for Charlotte Rampling.
The line-up for foreign language film usually has a must-see film, this year I've not heard of any of them /: Which of the five do you think has the most potential to connect with audiences? I liked Tobias Lindholm's "A War" and hope it scores a nom in that category.

    1. It would be great to see Rampling get a nomination, but I haven't seen 45 Years yet.

While Son of Saul is supposed to be excellent, I've also heard great things about Mustang.

  4. As seen on your predictions and many other I've seen, Sicario isn't even in the Best Picture discussion, which to me is insane. It's such a brilliant film!

    1. Oh, I agree. It totally should be in the discussion, but I don't see it getting in Best Picture at all, unfortunately.
