Wow, that's a lot of grade A (+/- included). I must see Mad Max. Everyone is saying how awesome it is. Two grades I'm surprised at, even though I haven't seen either, are Tomorrowland and Aloha. I've heard nothing but bad things about both.
ReplyDeleteMad Max was awesome! Hope you love it. I was surprised by Tomorrowland, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and I liked most of Aloha, even if it is lightweight.
DeleteYou liked Lost River a lot better than I did, and I wanted to like it so badly.

DeleteYou saw I Am Curious...and you preferred Blue? Granted, I've ONLY seen Yellow, but I was always under the impression that the only difference between the two was that Blue was...censored. Does it sneak into the CinSpecs? I'd love to know what it snags, if anything.
ReplyDeleteYeah, both films likely get a sole Directing nom apiece, as Yellow was released in '67 and Blue in '68. Actually, Yellow and Blue are different, even if they are billed as the "same" film. Like, Blue has maybe 10 minutes of Yellow's footage, but everything else is new scenes. So, they're technically different films. ;)

DeleteOh, Sense and Sensibility is now my #1 movie of 1995, and it's even in my top 100 of all time. (Haven't updated that list on here yet.) I forgot how great it is!
I still haven't seen a bunch of these but I love That Thing You Do! and Deathtrap.
ReplyDeleteI thought Michael Rooker was amazing in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer but I hated the film.
Was it the 30's version with Norma Shearer and Charles Laughton of the Barretts of Wimpole Street that you saw or the 50's one with Jennifer Jones and John Gielgud?
That Thing You Do! was great. I didn't expect to enjoy it so much. Deathtrap was fun, too.

It was the 30's version. I forgot there was a 50's one, which I haven't seen yet.
I didn't love Barbara (2012) as much as you, but it had a fine lead performance by Nina Hoss and did a good job of evoking the time it was set. I'm excited about checking out Petzold's recent film Phoenix (2014), which some say is the director's finest.
