  1. Videodrome is my favorite of 83 (so far), and also my fav Cronenberg, so I'm happy you acknowledge it!
The Right Stuff I liked as a technical achievement, I wouldn't go so far as to nominate it for writing. I'm with you that The Big Chill is an impressive screenplay.
Surprised Al Pacino missed out here for best actor! I haven't seen The Dresser or Tender Mercies. Robert de Niro is amazing in King of Comedy :)

    1. The Right Stuff will probably be replaced with another screenplay once I see some of those films I listed. ;)

Pacino just missed, but I love his performance. Glad you also love De Niro's performance.

  2. Would love to have seen you give Scarface or Videodrome a nod for Best Pic in place of Jedi. Damn Ewoks. And of course Pacino's perfectly and purposely over the top Tony Montana would get my vote for Best Actor. But hey, I'm a Scarface fanboy so take that with a grain of salt. Another great ballot.

    1. Thanks. Haha, I LOVE the original Star Wars trilogy, even Jedi. Pacino just missed my Best Actor lineup, but I am a fan of his performance.

  3. Great picks! Fanny would definitely top most of my '83 categories as well. Love that The Big Chill had such a strong showing here too. I love that film. And I still can't believe Lewis didn't get a nomination for The King of Comedy. He was so strong there.

    1. Thanks! I might nominate more performances from Fanny, but I need to rewatch it. Knew you'd love the Big Chill nominations. Yeah, Lewis easily should've gotten in. Even BAFTA nominated him.

  4. Picture:
    A Christmas Story
    The Outsiders
    The Right Stuff-Winner
    Terms of Endearment
    The Year of Living Dangerously
    Runner-ups-Silkwood, War Games
I can see how Terms won, it is a very moving film but it would be my fourth choice for the prize behind the warm whimsy of Christmas Story, the viscerally engaging Living Dangerously and my winner the enthralling The Right Stuff.

    Director:
    James L. Brooks-Terms of Endearment
    Bob Clark-A Christmas Story-Winner
    Francis Ford Coppola-The Outsiders
    Philip Kaufman-The Right Stuff
Peter Weir-The Year of Living Dangerously
    Runner-ups-John Badham-War Games, Mike Nichols-Silkwood
All the other directors have more esteemed and frankly more prestigious filmographies than Clark but his affection for his project is so clear and the nostalgic warmth he achieves so seamless that the film due to his effort and that of a perfect cast glides by without a hitch.

    Actor:
    Michael Caine-Educating Rita
    Tom Courtenay-The Dresser
    Albert Finney-The Dresser
    Jeroen Krabbe-The Fourth Man
    Nick Nolte-Under Fire-Winner
    Runner-ups-Matthew Brodrick-War Games, Robert Duvall-Tender Mercies, Tom Conti-Reuben, Reuben, Kevin Kline-The Pirates of Penzance, Eric Roberts-Star 80
Such a full category loaded with good work but Nolte's weary war correspondent in the tough Under Fire is among his best work-maybe his best although I loved Krabbe's work in the trippy Fourth Man.

    Actress:
    Bonnie Bedelia-Heart Like a Wheel
    Joanna Cassidy-Under Fire
    Shirley MacLaine-Terms of Endearment-Winner
    Renee Soutendijk-The Fourth Man
    Debra Winger-Terms of Endearment
    Runner-ups-Jane Alexander-Testament, Julie Christie-Heat and Dust, Meryl Streep-Silkwood, Julie Walters-Educating Rita
Again a group of outstanding performances and I could find good reasons to chose any of them. It was especially great to see two actresses, Bonnie Bedelia and Joanna Cassidy, that often are cast in roles far below their skill level get the opportunity at a quality lead. Soutendijk is electric as a black widow femme fatale who would have been right at home in a 50's noir in Fourth Man. Debra Winger gives a fully lived in performance in Terms-spunky, honest and true but Shirley really poured her guts into Aurora Greenway, even her over the top moments feel organic to the character. One of the few times a career Oscar was given for a really deserving piece of work.

    1. Oh, I LOVE those nods for The Outsiders, which was one of my favorite films as a teenager. I'm not a big fan of A Christmas Story, but it's great that you give it Best Director, which is a fun win. Glad to see The Dresser and Terms of Endearment pop up twice in the lead acting categories as well.

  5. Supporting Actor:
Charles Durning-To Be or Not To Be
    Gene Hackman-Under Fire
    Ed Harris-Under Fire
    Jerry Lewis-The King of Comedy
    Darren McGavin-A Christmas Story-Winner
    Runner-up-Jason Robards, Jr.-Max Dugan Returns
Lewis is brilliant in King, extraordinary to see how good he could be when playing straight. Durning finds the hilarity in playing a boob without actually tipping into caricature. Hackman is almost Nolte's equal in Under Fire and Ed Harris is chilling in his cavalier ruthlessness as a soldier of fortune in the same film. McGavin though is priceless as Ralphie's hot tempered and beleagued father in A Christmas Story.

    Supporting Actress:
    Cher-Silkwood
    Rebecca De Mornay-Risky Business
    Melinda Dillon-A Christmas Story
Linda Hunt-The Year of Living Dangerously-Winner
    Alfre Woodard-Cross Creek
Runner-ups-Tess Harper-Tender Mercies, Angela Lansbury-The Pirates of Penzance
The other actresses were all super but Hunt is unbeatable in Living Dangerously. I don't know how she and Weir arrived at the idea of her playing Billy Kwan but never for an instant does it feel like stunt casting.
