Oh I'm sooo glad I have It Happened One Night on my BlindSpot list! :D
ReplyDeleteYay! Hope you like it! :)
DeleteThere were many films made this year I liked but a thin year as far as award worthy pictures. I haven't seen the French version of Les Miserables but I have seen L'Atalante. I really wanted to like it having heard good things but it didn't engage me.

The Gay Divorcee
It Happened One Night-Winner
The Scarlet Empress
The Thin Man
Twentieth Century
All the these films are propped on thin premises, except Scarlet Empress, but managed to flesh out those out well. It Happened One Night probably has the thinnest and did the most with it.
Director:
Frank Capra-It Happened One Night-Winner
Howard Hawks-Twentieth Century
Mark Sandrich-The Gay Divorcee
Woody Van Dyke-The Thin Man
Josef von Sternberg-The Scarlet Empress
The fact that It Happened One Night worked so well can be laid almost entirely at Capra's feet, with an able assist from his players.
Actor:
Charles Boyer-Liliom
Robert Donat-The Count of Monte Cristo
Clark Gable-It Happened One Night
Leslie Howard-The Scarlet Pimpernel
William Powell-The Thin Man-Winner
Love Gable in One Night and if there was a prize for most star magnetism he'd win hands down but Powell has the magnetism as well and creates an enduring character to boot.
Actress:
Claudette Colbert-Cleopatra
Bette Davis-Of Human Bondage
Marlene Dietrich-The Scarlet Empress
Carole Lombard-Twentieth Century
Myrna Loy-The Thin Man-Winner
The ying to Powell's yang the great Myrna likewise exudes charisma and effortless sangfroid while fashioning an equally memorable character in Nora Charles to his Nick.
Supporting Actor:
Walter Connelly-It Happened One Night-Winner
Boris Karloff-The Lost Patrol
Charles Laughton-The Barretts of Wimpole Street
Peter Lorre-The Man Who Knew Too Much
Warren William-Cleopatra
Connelly's exasperated father is a role he repeated many times but with limited screen time he made him vital to the overall success of the film.
Supporting Actress:
Louise Beavers-Imitation of Life-Winner
Mary Boland-Six of a Kind
Bette Davis-Fog Over Frisco
Fredi Washington-Imitation of Life
Jane Withers-Bright Eyes
Withers marvelous little monster in Bright Eyes is so good she steals the spotlight from Shirley Temple in her prime while Boland's frustrated wife is another gem in her gallery. Fog Over Frisco is standard quickie fodder except for Davis's work as the foolish, implusive Arlene, you can feel her character's headlong rush to destruction the minute Bette explodes onto the screen. Washington's Peola in Life is an interesting take on the character but not nearly as compelling as Susan Kohner's Sarah Jane in the remake which lead me to choose Louise Beavers performance as put upon mother Delilah. As was the case with Hattie McDaniel, Juanita Moore and a host of others she showed that delightful as she might have been in small supporting roles she had so much more to offer.
Oh, I love that you give Powell and Loy wins. They give two of my favorite losing performances. I slightly prefer Gable's and Colbert's performances, but Nick and Nora are certainly the better couple. I nominate Lorre in 1935, since Man was released in the U.S. that year. Laughton, I suspect, will also make my lineup once I see Barretts.
