  1. Boy I REALLY want to see 'Mutiny on the Bounty' even more now since you like it so much. Seems that every other decade there's an Anna Karenina film, ahah.

    1. Mutiny is great, especially for Laughton's performance as Bligh. Haha, that's not only the case with Anna Karenina but also Les Miserables. ;)

  2. Picture:
    The Bride of Frankenstein
    Captain Blood
    David Copperfield
    Les Miserables
    Mutiny on the Bounty-Winner
With three great literary adaptations, an expertly done horror film and a rollicking adventure to choose from it was almost impossible to select a winner. Since all are so well done I went with the one I found the most consistently involving and by that measure Bounty is the winner.

    Director:
    George Cukor-David Copperfield
    Michael Curtiz-Captain Blood
    Alfred Hitchcock-The 39 Steps
    Frank Lloyd-Mutiny on the Bounty-Winner
    James Whale-The Bride of Frankenstein
Mutiny is a huge undertaking and a more complex one than any of the other films. It takes a firm, steady hand to keep that in view and guide three terrific performances as well, as the sad remake showed in the 60's. Lloyd pulls that off very well.

    Actor:
    Errol Flynn-Captain Blood
    Clark Gable-Mutiny on the Bounty
    Charles Laughton-Mutiny on the Bounty
    Fred MacMurray-Alice Adams
    Fredric March-Les Miserables
You can't get better than Laughton's intrepretation of Bligh not even Flynn at his most dashing.

    Actress:
    Madeleine Carroll-The 39 Steps
    Greta Garbo-Anna Karenina-Winner
    Katharine Hepburn-Alice Adams
    Carole Lombard-Hands Across the Table
    Barbara Stanwyck-Annie Oakley
All the ladies are wonderful in very different ways but Anna Karenina is a heavy, complex tricky character which has challenged every actress who has ever attempted her, Garbo's is the truest intrepretation I've seen.

    Supporting Actor:
    Eric Blore-Top Hat
    James Cagney-A Midsummer Night's Dream
    W.C. Fields-David Copperfield-Winner
    Charlie Ruggles-Ruggles of Red Gap
    Franchot Tone-Mutiny on the Bounty
In his least affected, jokey performance Fields as Mr. Micawber walks off with any scene in which he appears in David Copperfield.

    Supporting Actress:
    Mary Boland-Ruggles of Red Gap
    Bette Davis-Bordertown
    Margot Grahame-The Informer
    Elsa Lanchester-The Bride of Frankenstein-Winner
    ZaSu Pitts-Ruggles of Red Gap
The Ruggles girls are both hysterical, Grahame touching and Davis surprisingly more subdued than Ida Lupino was when Bordertown was reworked into They Drive by Night a few years later but none can match Lanchester's Bride.

    1. Love those Mutiny on the Bounty wins, and Garbo is my Best Actress runner-up. My only problem with Lancaster's performance is that she doesn't have much to do. She's good, though her performance isn't as iconic as her character. De Havilland seems like an odd winner here, but she stuck out the most in a weak category.
