Oscar Oddity #16: Two Acting Nods in the Same Year

Sigourney Weaver: The first loser in both acting categories.

Eleven actors - Fay Bainter, Teresa Wright, Barry Fitzgerald, Jessica Lange, Sigourney Weaver, Al Pacino, Holly Hunter, Emma Thompson, Julianne Moore, Jamie Foxx and Cate Blanchett - have been nominated for two acting Oscars in the same year. Of those eleven, Weaver, Thompson, Moore and Blanchett lost in both categories, while the rest took home one statuette.

This gives the ladies special distinction, as no man has ever lost when doubly nominated. Weaver and Moore even have their own interesting statistic: they're the only women ever nominated for two acting Oscars in the same year who've lost both, despite not being a previous winner. In other words, Blanchett and Thompson already had an Oscar when they lost in both categories.

Tom Hanks could also join this list if he's recognized for Captain Phillips and Saving Mr. Banks in a few months. However, he could do more than that by becoming the first man to lose in both categories. Since he doesn't look like a frontrunner in either category (and he already has two Oscars), he could very well find himself with his own odd Oscar statistic.

  1. That's too bad Cate Blanchett lost in both categories that year, but at least she won for The Aviator :)
Tom Hanks will be ok, he's won his share. You say Hanks is not the frontrunner in either category, who is?

    1. Yeah, I'd give Natalie Portman the win for Closer in '04, but I'm still glad Blanchett won. :) I'd say the frontrunners are Ejiofor, McConaughey and Redford in Best Actor and Fassbender in Best Supporting Actor. Actually, Supp Actor is wide open, so Hanks could have a shot in that category.

  3. Very interesting trivia Josh, I always enjoy your Oscar Oddity posts! So what's the film on the left that Sigourney starred in? I know the right image is Working Girl.

    1. Thanks Ruth. The image on the left is from Gorillas in the Mist, which is the film for which she lost Best Actress in '88.

  4. I really thought Blanchett was going to win that year for I'm Not There. Can't argue with Swinton though.

    Cool Oscar oddity!

    1. I actually predicted Swinton (and Cotillard) that year. It was one of my most accurate years for predictions.

      Thanks!
