Oscar Bombs of the 2010s

Oscar had no love for Shutter Island.

Every year Oscar prognosticators throw out their guesses at what will be nominated months later by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. As the year progresses, some frontrunners stay strong, some new ones emerge, and others disappear entirely. Here's a look at some recent films that were predicted for Best Picture and other top prizes early on in their respective Oscar races. In the end, all of them failed to get nominated. It just proves that Oscar prognosticating isn't an exact science.

2010 Contenders:

Somewhere proved too divisive for the Academy.

The American (dir. Anton Corbijn)
Fair Game (dir. Doug Liman)
How Do You Know (dir. James L. Brooks)
Love & Other Drugs (dir. Edward Zwick)
Miral (dir. Julian Schnabel)
Never Let Me Go (dir. Mark Romanek)
Shutter Island (dir. Martin Scorsese)
Somewhere (dir. Sofia Coppola)

2011 Contenders:

Reitman couldn't strike Oscar gold again with Young Adult.

Carnage (dir. Roman Polanski)
A Dangerous Method (dir. David Cronenberg)
J. Edgar (dir. Clint Eastwood)
Like Crazy (dir. Drake Doremus)
Martha Marcy May Marlene (dir. Sean Durkin)
Super 8 (dir. J.J. Abrams)
We Need to Talk About Kevin (dir. Lynne Ramsay)
Young Adult (dir. Jason Reitman)

2012 Contenders:

The Dark Knight Rises even failed to receive technical nominations.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (dir. John Madden)
The Dark Knight Rises (dir. Christopher Nolan)
Hyde Park on Hudson (dir. Roger Michell)
Killing Them Softly (dir. Andrew Dominik)
On the Road (dir. Walter Salles)
Promised Land (dir. Gus Van Sant)
Quartet (dir. Dustin Hoffman)
Rust and Bone (dir. Jacques Audiard)

It will be interesting to see what films fall off the radar in the next few months heading into awards season. It seems James Gray's The Immigrant has already joined the films on these lists, but I might've overestimated it in the first place. As far as the other frontrunners of the year are concerned, time will tell.

  1. God, I remember most of these flicks getting as much buzz as they could muster up, but nothing good came of it. The only one of this list that really pissed me off to high heavens was Young Adult. First of all, great movie but most importantly, Charlize Theron. She gave the best female performance I saw of all 2011 and got nothing for it. Bull to the shit on that one. Solid list bud.

    1. Thanks man. I love Theron's performance, but it's a crowded category. Sadly, she's outside of my top 5, in favor of Juliette Binoche (Certified Copy), Emily Browning (Sleeping Beauty), Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia), Zoe Heran (Tomboy), and Anna Paquin (Margaret).

  2. I still think it's a little messed up that The Dark Knight Rises didn't get a single nomination. There's a lot of great films on this list. I always think of this poster when I think of J.Edgar and the Oscars - http://www.theshiznit.co.uk/media/2012/January/bestpicture/j-edgar.jpg

  3. OMG! You nominate Haren? I love you! LOL, and this is coming from someone who has her on the very outside of his top ten in favor of...Charlize Theron!

Back to this subject though, I remember predicting Carnage, J. Edgar and Super 8 for a slew of stuff. Whoops.

Remember when Revolutionary Road was going to win Joaquin Phoenix his Oscar?

    1. Yeah, she just replaced Brenda Blethyn (for London River). So glad I finally watched it.

      Me too. It happens.

Yeah. How about when All the King's Men ('06) was going to get a slew of nominations?

    1. She deserved to get in. I suspect Mara or Close was the nominee that replaced her.

  5. Great picks here. If I had to pick one film per year from your lists that I wanted to see nominated, it would be Somewhere, We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Rust and Bone. Three remarkable films that were all worthy of a nomination.
