I LOVE that Cinema Paradiso gets some mentions here Josh, I adore that movie, esp the music which I have listened to endlessly before I saw the film. Boy I really need to see My Left Foot, it somehow eluded me for some reason.

DeleteI have Cinema Paradiso in 1988 I think, where it has a mini sweep since it is like amazing on so many levels. Great year for film here. I still need to see so much more though. Right now I think my winner is The Little Mermaid :-P
ReplyDeleteI have CP here because it won the Oscar that year. At one time, it was in my top 5, but it fell after I saw The Seventh Continent and Drugstore Cowboy. I also liked Monsieur Hire more than its one nod indicates. Great year, no doubt. Nothing wrong with having The Little Mermaid that high. ;)

ReplyDeleteLike me you're obviously an admirer of The Fabulous Baker Boys and the very underrated performances of The Brothers Bridges; and your Best Actress selections contain a couple of my all-time favourites too.
Good call on Nicole Kidman in Dead Calm, but for me it's a toss of the coin between Michelle and Meg Ryan. The choice is made doubly hard as both those performances contain iconic scenes with Pfeiffer's Makin' Whoopee and Meg's "moment" in Katz's Deli.
Don't ask me to choose a favourite out of those two or my head might just explode!

You know, 1989 was a damn fine year, wasn't it? Shame that wasn't really represented by the Academy, but oh well. The Decalogue and The Seventh Continent, I mean... wow.

Noyce creates a real nail biter, the dreamy aura of Field of Dreams is irresistible and Howard gets all the problematic interactions of a large family just right but Spielberg is back in top form after the misstep of Temple of Doom and he, Ford and Connery take the audience on a great thrill ride.

In Country is a very uneven film with a powerful conclusion but one area where it's not deficient is in the acting department. Both Willis and Emily Lloyd turn in beautiful performances as a damaged vet and his questioning niece. Lange brings her mix of grit and vulnerability to Ann Talbot pulling the audience in as she slowly discovers terrible long buried secrets. Winona plays all the right notes in the fractured Heathers and Meg's radiance and intelligent take on the difficult Sally makes that character endearing rather than irksome as she could have been if played by someone less deft. But Sally, surrounded by that phenomenal group of scene stealing actresses, attacks the complicated role of M'Lynn and consistently finds the truth in the role. Sure she tears up her big scene but it's the lowkey subtle touches spread throughout the whole movie that makes her my winner.
Supporting Actor:

Burt Lancaster-Field of Dreams
Armin Mueller-Stahl-Music Box
Denzel Washington-Glory
Connery, ideally cast and having fun, Mueller-Stahl and Washington are all superior but this was between Lancaster and Bochner in radically different roles. Burt's role is little more than a cameo but in his few minutes on screen he creates a fascinating, touching and deeply moving character that you can believe would be a catalyst for the story. Bochner a solid journeyman actor who is often wasted in indifferent parts or as an unrepentant sleaze attacks the role of the morally bankrupt but enticingly sexy Jack who plays on Colin Firth's Adrian's many insecurities to the ultimate benefit of neither with equal parts menace and allure.

I can't argue with Fricker's win, she's excellent as DDL's mother in My Left Foot but the incomparable Wiest is spectacular in her private moments and her interactions with every other character in Parenthood.
I'm kind of cheating giving Best Picture to a mini-series this year. (I don't recognize anything TV-related anywhere else.) Still, it played in Poland originally, but it was screened theatrically in some countries (like in the Netherlands in 1990), so I made an exception for one of my favorite directors.
DeleteOh, I haven't seen a few of these films, but your lineups are very interesting. I like that Glory/Indiana Jones split, and those Philip Noyce and Sean Connery nominations are terrific. I still need to check out Field's and Bochner's performances.
