50 Shots from To the Wonder

Terrence Malick's highly anticipated sixth film was released in select theaters and on VOD last weekend. I've seen it twice, and I'm still not sure what I think of it. At the moment, I'd call it a great film, but it has its flaws. So, I thought I'd highlight the film by looking at Emmanuel Lubezki's beautiful cinematography. Check out some of the images below.

  1. Just by looking at the stills I get Tree of Life flashbacks.. The man certainly has his style but based on Tree of Life, I ain't a fan.
I don't know.. there's one thing to have a consistency to your movies but sometimes there's just too much similarity. But how would I know, I just saw the stills but maybe the story is different? Looking forward of the where you can prove me wrong.. or right, either way.

    1. Haha, there's one shot that I didn't include with a boy that looks just like Hunter McCracken from the back.

Hmm... The themes and style of The Tree of Life and To the Wonder are similar, but the stories are different. To the Wonder primarily focuses on a love story, with a subplot about a priest struggling with his faith in God.

I can understand not liking his work based on The Tree of Life, which isn't without its faults. Malick's films are full of gorgeous images, but I like to think there is substance behind the style.
