  1. ok being new around here, how do you decide these picks? Just from everything you've watched? Do you go out of your way to see other award winning performances so you can compare and contrast?

    1. Yes, I decide them from everything I've watched. And I do go out of my way to see other award-winning performances. For instance, I've seen every Oscar-winning Supporting Actor performance of the 1990s except for James Coburn in Affliction in 1998.

Though, some years are not as strong. Like my Supporting Actress picks for the 1930s. Some of those years I had to struggle to come up with a winner.

    2. You haven't seen Affliction? Fantastic movie. I've had my eye out for the novel secondhand for nearly a year now too.

    3. I know, I know. I'll get to it some day. :)

  2. Ralph Fiennes FTW. Great that Oldman appears twice on this list, but I haven't seen State of Grace.

    1. I highly recommend State of Grace. It's my favorite Oldman performance.

  3. Awesome choices, especially love you picking Fiennes and Oldman. I love se7en and Spacey was good but the actor who impressed me the most there was Freeman. He was playing such a kind guy, who keep fighting for the world although he saw terrible things. It's such a peaceful, dignified work.

    1. Thanks! I totally agree on Freeman, but I have him as a co-lead with Pitt. And Joe Pesci was THIS close to winning for Casino.

  4. Great choices! Fiennes was chilling in Schindler's List, as was Spacey in Se7en (I haven't seen either film since I first saw them, but those performances stuck with me).
I just watched Fargo for the first time recently - loved it! So funny, and Buscemi was ace!

  5. Furious Styles, hell yes. That is such a perfect acting performance. GIVE ME THE MOTHAFUCKIN GUY, TREY!

Madsen in Res Dogs is such a perfect choice too. As is Spacey in Se7en, and, of course, Cruise.

    Love these posts of yours.

  6. Affliction is great, and Nolte is marvelous so SEE THAT MOVIE, and the novel is even better. Russell Banks is a brilliant author.

Oh, and the fact that you award Spacey for Se7en (so much better than The Usual Suspects) and Fishburn, who both also win the Fisti in their respective years, makes me love you so much...

BUT, considering that we are fellow Crowe-Worshipers...how can you give Law the win in 1997, when Crowe basically should win every award for his turn in L.A. Confidential? If you consider him lead and give him the win there, then I retract my question. I consider him supporting since I view the entire film as an ensemble with no clear lead, but I understand those who place him in lead.

Either way, he deserves the win!

    1. I'll look into the novel and the movie at some point.

Glad to known that Spacey and Fishburne got Fistis. Can't wait to see those lineups sometime. :)

Crowe gets the Best Actor win for L.A. Confidential in my favorite performance of his. It's debatable whether or not he's lead, but I see him as the lead, with Pearce and Spacey supporting.

    2. Yeah, L.A. is a bounty of riches in acting and I nominate Crowe, Spacey and Cromwell in supporting on most days. I could probably easily fill the ballot with actors from the film, but I resist and give Law and Addy nominations.

Speaking of Crowe and 'best performance'...have you seen Romper Stomper. It is in my top five favorite performances EVER.

    3. Nice lineup. Addy is a great choice, but I'm slightly partial to Wilkinson. Besides Law, Pearce, and Spacey, I'd nominate Affleck and Williams for Good Will Hunting.

Crowe was fantastic in Romper Stomper!
