L'Eclisse (dir. Michelangelo Antonioni) |
Ryan recently posted his 2014 Blind Spot list, so I finally finished mine. Next year I'm going with one film from each decade (1910's-2010's) and an extra one from the 1980's. It should be an interesting year.
The Birth of a Nation (1915)
The Docks of New York (1928)
The Smiling Lieutenant (1931)
Foreign Correspondent (1940)
Tokyo Story (1953)
L'Eclisse (1962)
Solaris (1972)
Paris, Texas (1984)
My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
Close-Up (1990)
Man on Wire (2008)
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010)
I've only seen Tokyo Story and My Neighbour Totoro. Solaris is in mine too. Hi5!
ReplyDeleteYay! I really need to see Solaris, so this gives me an excuse to finally do that.
DeleteI've seen 7 of these! The Smiling Lieutenant, Paris, Texas and My Neighbor Totoro are brilliant! Masterpieces! Can't wait for you to see them :-D
ReplyDeleteNice. I'm excited about seeing all of these!
DeleteI've seen 7 of these. In fact, I'm going to re-watch L'Eclisse for December now that I have La Notte. Birth of a Nation is in my Blind-Spot while the films I haven't seen that you listed are My Neighbor Totoro, The Docks of New York, Foreign Correspondent, and The Smiling Lieutenant. Anyways, good luck.
ReplyDeleteThanks man. I haven't seen La Notte. Maybe I'll get to it when I watch L'Eclisse.
DeleteLa Notte is marvelous! One of my favorites from the 60s.
DeleteUgh. You should list those somewhere. ;)
DeleteInteresting list. I just caught up with Solaris and Tokyo Story last year, and both should definitely be seen. My Neighbor Totoro is on my list for 2014, which I'll be releasing next week. It will be interesting to see what you think of Uncle Boonmee.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dan. I'm looking forward to seeing all of those films you mentioned.
DeleteSo many of these that I haven't seen either! Perhaps I chose the wrong twelve to watch next year.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I might see Totoro before the year is out: The Lightbox here in Toronto is screening a Ghibli retrospective.
Your list of twelve is great, so I wouldn't worry about it.
DeleteThat would be an awesome way to see it for the first time. I've never seen a Ghibli release in theaters.
Wow, you are such a prolific viewer, Josh. These sounds like amazing picks for the Blind Spot series, so which one of these are you favorite?
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen any of them, but my best prediction for favorite film out of these would be The Smiling Lieutenant or The Docks of New York. Can't wait to see what I think of them!

ReplyDeleteAn interesting selection. I've only seen one of them: I'm in the minority but I personally found Solaris to be too slow. It took far too long to get to the actual plot of the movie and scenes kelt dragging on longer than they needed to. I actually preferred the Clooney version:

Thanks. I can understand finding Solaris to be too slow and drawn-out, but most of Tarkovsky's films are like that. His films are often a challenge for me, yet I haven't disliked one of them yet. (I've seen 5 of them - Solaris, The Sacrifice, Ivan's Childhood, Andrei Rublev and Stalker.) I like the Clooney version, but I prefer the original, despite the length.
