Oscar Scenes That Weren't: 2011

A victim of the snub.

Let's face it: the Academy Awards always snub one if not dozens of performances every year. Here are five scenes that should've (or could've) been nomination-worthy. Essentially, these are the scenes that probably would've been played at the Oscar ceremony when the nominee's name was read. (Granted, I had to work with what I could find online.)

Note: Performances like those of Fassbender (Shame), Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Shannon (Take Shelter), Harrelson (Rampart), Theron (Young Adult), Pitt (The Tree of Life), Paquin (Margaret), and Binoche (Certified Copy) aren't mentioned because most, if not all, of those are popular snubs.

In no particular order (possible spoilers):

1. Tom Hardy/Joel Edgerton, Warrior

2. Paul Bettany, Margin Call

3. Jessica Chastain, Take Shelter*

4. Peter Mullan, Tyrannosaur

5. Melanie Laurent, Beginners

*Though she was nominated for The Help, I prefer this performance. And what a scene that is.

  1. Laurent is a Fisti nominee...such a marvelous performance. I also LOVE Mullan too, but MY GOD that category is stacked.

    1. YAY! Isn't it though? By the way, Ralph Fiennes (Coriolanus) also would've made this list, but I couldn't find a clip to use.

  2. Loved Beginners and Take Shelter. I can't say that I loved Tyrannasaur, because it was so depressing, but it was a damn fine film.

  3. I didn't really like Beginners and Laurent was a big part of the problem for me, I have yet to see something from her that would impress me, she was fine in Inglourious Basterds, but here she was so...lifeless. I nominate and give Chastain win for The Help but she was fantastic in take Shelter, the movie was brilliant too.

    1. Sorry you didn't like Beginners. :( I thought Laurent was anything but lifeless in both films.

Chastain was fantastic in The Debt, Coriolanus, The Help, Take Shelter, and The Tree of Life. She could honestly fill my entire Supporting Actress category, but Laurent's work really struck me. Her performance just seemed so real, so effortless, in what could've been a forgettable part.
