Glad to hear Duke makes your ballot now....Hi Joel,

Glad to hear Duke makes your ballot now. I still need to see Me, Natalie. Actually, I still have a lot of catching up to do in this year.

I was working on a 1955 ballot update, but I put that on hold, since I've been watching a lot of 2015 films over the past couple of months. While I might post an unofficial ballot in a few weeks, I'll have to wait a while to see films like 45 Years and Macbeth.Joshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08596682195753811295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-27121437621309028642015-12-27T17:40:53.164-05:002015-12-27T17:40:53.164-05:00Hi Josh,
Just thought I'd drop back to say I ...Hi Josh,

Just thought I'd drop back to say I finally, finally! was able to locate Patty Duke's performance in Me, Natalie on YouTube.

She was exceptional, hard to believe she was so naturalistic and real in this and so out of control in Valley of the Dolls in the same year! She would definitely make my list of nominees now, replacing Maggie Smith but Jane Fonda would still be my winner.

There was also a very fine performance by Nancy Marchand as Patty's mother, she'd actually make my supporting lineup now taking Rita Moreno's place. The movie itself was okay, very rooted in the 60's with a large dose of the generation gap thrown in but a decent film.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-41503494170186702862014-11-04T23:53:40.629-05:002014-11-04T23:53:40.629-05:00I haven't seen Blake's performance, but Yo...I haven't seen Blake's performance, but Young is my runner-up. York is VERY deserving of any win for Horses, but I just couldn't resist Hawn's lovable performance. I fell for it like the Academy, I suppose.Joshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08596682195753811295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-27598392993599920542014-11-04T23:49:22.353-05:002014-11-04T23:49:22.353-05:00Oh, I'd love to hear if Army of Shadows and Ke...Oh, I'd love to hear if Army of Shadows and Kes make your ballot once you see them. Haha, I wouldn't like Easy Rider as much without Jack Nicholson's performance.

It's great to see those wins for Horses and Hoffman, and Wexler is an inspired choice for Best Director. I've never heard of Me, Natalie, but now I want to track it down for Duke's performance.Joshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08596682195753811295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-81404917976384888382014-11-04T19:38:52.431-05:002014-11-04T19:38:52.431-05:00Supporting Actor:

Quayle is an excellent Wolsey and Buttons heartbreaking as the desperate Sailor in Horses. Blake is most impressive as Willie Boy, full of anger, sadness and bewilderment. He's my runner up but I agree with the academy on this one. Although the sour alcoholic he plays is apparently all to close to the tragic Young's real self his performance as the marathon MC is superb and deserving of the award.

Supporting Actress:
Verna Bloom-Medium Cool
Pamela Franklin-The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
Goldie Hawn-Cactus Flower
Rita Moreno-Marlowe
Susannah York-They Shoot Horses, Don't They?-Winner
Both Verna and Pamela add a great deal to their films and I'm crazy about Rita Moreno's randy take on blonde stripper Dolores Gonzalez but this was a two way race. I can see how Goldie, a gamin delight in Cactus Flower charmed her way to the prize and I'm certainly not one who thinks comedy is easier than drama but Susannah York's desperate, deluded Alice is so layered and visceral for me Goldie's star wattage can't compete.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-79088664136591819242014-11-04T19:38:15.822-05:002014-11-04T19:38:15.822-05:00I'm going to add Kes and Army of Shadows to my...I'm going to add Kes and Army of Shadows to my list, they both sound interesting, you gave both so many noms and I love Simone Signoret so Shadows has an added inducement. One I did see and hope never to see again is Easy Rider, I hated it so much!

Picture:
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Medium Cool
Midnight Cowboy
They Shoot Horses, Don't They?-Winner
Z
I love political thrillers so both Medium Cool and Z were strong contenders for me but the complex, brutal world of Horses is so well presented I find new things in it every time I watch.

Director:
Costa Gavras-Z
George Roy Hill-Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Sydney Pollack-They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
John Schlesinger-Midnight Cowboy
Haskell Wexler-Medium Cool-Winner
Pollack does a great job creating the sad world of Depression marathons as Schlesinger does with the New York of Cowboy really the same goes for Z and Butch. However Wexler, using both his cinematographer's eye and knowledge of documentary filmmaking, blends the fictional and real in Medium Cool making it immediate, fascinating and unique.

Actor:
Richard Burton-Anne of the Thousand Days
Robert Forster-Medium Cool
Dustin Hoffman-Midnight Cowboy-Winner
Jean-Louis Trintignant-Z
John Voight-Midnight Cowboy
I know the Duke's win this year was a sentimental one but as those things tend to do it backed up on him so that when his deserving performance in The Shootist came along he wasn't even nominated.

The other four men were great but Hoffman's Ratso is such a distinctive creation there's no question his was the best performance of the year.

Actress:
Genevieve Bujold-Anne of the Thousand Days
Jane Fonda-They Shoot Horses, Don't They?-Winner
Shirley Knight-The Rain People
Liza Minnelli-The Sterile Cuckoo
Maggie Smith-The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
I love Maggie Smith and her work in Jean Brodie is interesting but rather studied, she's been better many other times. Liza's work as Pookie Adams is so exposed and raw, even if it doesn't use her musical gifts, I think it's the best acting she done including Cabaret. Both Bujold and Knight are stupendous in their respective films but Jane is a revelation in Horses. This was the role that turned her career around and with good reason. Gone is the effervescent blonde that she played so well replaced by a ground down woman whose bitterness seeps through the screen.

There is one performance I've been searching for years for but the film seems unavailable anywhere, that's Patty Duke in Me, Natalie. From what I've heard she is brilliant in it, the best she ever was and had the film been a success she would have swept the awards in a walk.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-67573282700885441982013-05-01T23:11:12.432-04:002013-05-01T23:11:12.432-04:00Sorry you were underwhelmed, but I'm glad you ...Sorry you were underwhelmed, but I'm glad you like some of my picks.

Oh, there are a few great ones in there. My classification system isn't strict. I use US dates, original foreign ones, and even Oscar nominations to classify a film's release date.

For instance, Kes was released in the US in 1970, but I included it here. Also, last week I put Wild Strawberries on my 1959 ballot because it got nominated for Best Original Screenplay for that year. It's a messed up system, to say the least.Joshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08596682195753811295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-51657277081571238002013-04-26T18:00:41.963-04:002013-04-26T18:00:41.963-04:00LOVE Hoffman's and Nicholson's performance...LOVE Hoffman's and Nicholson's performances.
