I couldn't fit it in Best Picture, but I'm glad I could give it 3 noms, including a Score win and a Screenplay nod for Richard Curtis.

Ooh, that's awesome! I haven't actually seen Latter Days yet. Must do that.Joshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08596682195753811295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-63071368765134048422015-01-23T00:15:59.167-05:002015-01-23T00:15:59.167-05:00I'm just crazy about Love Actually. It's something that when I have the blues I can pop in and by the end it's chased them away, even with Emma Thompson's heartbreaking vignette.

I would have loved to give something to Latter Days. I have a special place in my heart for that film. By chance I attended its world premiere and most of the cast and the director were there, including Jacqueline Bissett!! After the screening there was a Q & A. The audience, which had loved the film anyway, went wild when she was introduced since she was a surprise guest. She was gracious, lovely and charming. It was a great chance to see star power up close.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-73632105643586079112015-01-22T21:24:43.391-05:002015-01-22T21:24:43.391-05:00Great picks. Glad to see Master and Commander on there as well. Though it received 10 Oscar noms, that film seems underrated now.Joshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08596682195753811295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-53233133384953034602015-01-21T20:41:32.499-05:002015-01-21T20:41:32.499-05:00This was a tough year for me. There are several fi...This was a tough year for me. There are several films I really liked that weren't necessarily awards caliber and several that were highly touted that I thought were junk, Cold Mountain, Mystic River, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lord of the Rings, etc. I've also somehow missed Lost in Translation and a few others that I've meant to get to but never have.

Picture:
Big Fish
The Italian Job
Love Actually-Winner
Master & Commander
Under the Tuscan Sun
I have a weakness for multi-episodic films so while the other pictures were all enjoyable the serio-comic Love Actually was an easy choice.

Director:
Tim Burton-Big Fish
Richard Curtis-Love Actually-Winner
F. Gary Gray-The Italian Job
Peter Weir-Master & Commander
Audrey Wells-Under the Tuscan Sun
Curtis finds just the right balance for his film injecting dashes of real life into what could have been just another celebrity cavalade. Any question of how well he accomplished that can be answered by looking at the sorry excuses that have been made by others trying to duplicate this film.

Actor:
Russell Crowe-Master & Commander
Peter Dinklage-The Station Agent-Winner
Ben Kingsley-House of Sand & Fog
Sean Penn-21 Grams
Steve Sandvoss-Latter Days
Penn won for his work in Mystic River but he is far better and less showy in 21 Grams. Kingsley's very powerful as a man mired in an untenable situation and Crowe robust and charismatic as the Master & Commander. In his screen debut Sandvoss gives a layered performance of Aaron, a Mormon missionary confronted with his true nature and the journey he must make to come to terms with it. However Dinklage is so wonderful in The Station Agent he is handily my choice.

Actress:
Diane Keaton-Something's Gotta Give
Diane Lane-Under the Tuscan Sun
Helen Mirren-Calendar Girls
Charlize Theron-Monster-Winner
Emma Thompson-Love Actually
Five terrific pieces of work. I particularly love Emma Thompson's exquisite performance as the betrayed Karen in Love Actually, but Theron transcends her very convincing make up job to get under the scary skin of Aileen Wuornos, she truly deserved that Oscar.

Supporting Actor:
Paul Bettany-Master and Commander
Benicio del Toro-21 Grams
Albert Finney-Big Fish
Hugh Grant-Love Actually
Bill Nighy-Love Actually-Winner
This category seemed somewhat thin this year but I knew who my winner was before I started. Nighy simply rips into the debaunched Billy Mack with undisguised glee and as good as the rest of the cast is in his film he walks away with it.

Supporting Actress:
Shohreh Aghdashloo-House of Sand and Fog-Winner
Helena Bonham Carter-Big Fish
Laura Linney-Love Actually
Mary Kay Place-Latter Days
Julie Walters-Calendar Girls
I loved the lighter moments in Love Actually but Laura Linney, along with Emma Thompson, made the darker corners of her story incredibly real and powerful as a woman who in dealing with the mental illness of a loved one has shut down her life. HBC captures the fairy tale feeling of her portion of Big Fish delightfully. Mary Kay Place in her few short scenes makes the unreasoning fear and confusion that her character feels at something she can't comprend very real if not understandable. She's even able to make you feel something for Sister Gladys despite the anguish she causes. It's Aghdashloo performance though that is so crushingly delicate and beautiful that the fine work of the others pales in comparison. I thought hers was the best performance of the year by anyone.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-83961727747278603762014-05-07T20:32:25.914-04:002014-05-07T20:32:25.914-04:00I'll probably try to catch up on films I'v...I'll probably try to catch up on films I've missed once I finish posting my CinSpec Awards from 1930-present.
