So glad to see a win for Rosalind Russell's performance, which is the best thing about Picnic. Cagney and Day just missed my Actor and Actress lineups, and I hated leaving them out.Joshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08596682195753811295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-32061139190371285562014-08-28T20:42:52.956-04:002014-08-28T20:42:52.956-04:00Fewer great movies this year but it was incredibly...Fewer great movies this year but it was incredibly tough to chose between the ones there were, all are unique and brilliant. But great performances abound throughout so many films. I don't understand the Marty love this year. It was a nice film but no award winner in any category.

Picture:
All That Heaven Allows
Bad Day at Black Rock
Diabolique
East of Eden-Winner
Night of the Hunter
Heaven is a masterpiece of working within the Hollywood system to make trenchant observations about society's mores while seemingly telling a simple soapy story. Bad Day pares it story to the bone to keep its story taut. But it was the other three that I had the hardest time choosing between. Hunter and Diabolique are both frightening and creepy in their own particular ways but the scope of East of Eden is just breaktaking. I'm a bit prejudiced in its favor since the source material is my favorite book, even if they only filmed the second half.

Director:
Henri-Georges Clozot-Diabolique
Elia Kazan-East of Eden
Charles Laughton-Night of the Hunter-Winner
Douglas Sirk-All That Heaven Allows
John Sturges-Bad Day at Black Rock
The other four men do powerful work but Laughton does such extraordinary things with his material and draws great performances from his cast in his only time behind the camera he had to be the winner.

Actor:
James Cagney-Love Me or Leave Me
James Dean-East of Eden-Winner
Henry Fonda-Mister Roberts
Robert Mitchum-Night of the Hunter
Spencer Tracy-Black Day at Black Rock
This was between Mitchum and Dean for me. Mitchum was incredible but so was Dean. Mitchum is a silky devil but Cal Trask required more levels than Harry Powell. Dean's venerated for Rebel Without a Cause but to me this is a much deeper performance.

Actress:
Vera Clouzot-Diabolique
Doris Day-Love Me or Leave Me
Susan Hayward-I'll Cry Tomorrow-Winner
Vivien Leigh-The Deep Blue Sea
Anna Magnani-The Rose Tattoo
I love all five of these performances and I wanted to hand this to Doris Day for the best performance of her career but I had to go with Susan Hayward. While The President's Lady is my overall favorite of her work this is her career best. She really pours her guts into her portayal of Lillian Roth including doing her own singing and dancing, skills that she had not been known for previously.

Supporting Actor:
Jack Lemmon-Mister Roberts-Winner
Raymond Massey-East of Eden
Sal Mineo-Rebel Without a Cause
Robert Ryan-Bad Day at Black Rock
Peter Ustinov-We're No Angels
This was the toughest choice for me since all are really fine but very different pieces of work. Ryan is uniformly great, how is it possible he was only nominated once in his career?, Massey very good in a tricky role while Mineo is so lost and anguished as the doomed Plato. I almost went with the great Ustinov as the grimly witty Jules in that most unconventional Christmas tale We're No Angels but both Bogart and Aldo Ray are equally worthy there so it's Lemmon who really is irresistible.

Supporting Actress:
Lillian Gish-Night of the Hunter
Julie Harris-East of Eden
Rosalind Russell-Picnic-Winner
Simone Signoret-Diabolique
Jo Van Fleet-I'll Cry Tomorrow
Once again five great pieces of work. Van Fleet won for her role in East of Eden but since they cut so much out of the part of Kate I think she's better in Tomorrow. Harris, Gish and Signoret are all brilliant but Russell's interpretation of the desperate to marry Rosemary is shockingly raw when she has her near breakdown. She famously refused to allow herself to be entered in supporting, understandable considering that to do so at that time would have ended her career in the star spot, but had she its almost a given that she would have won the statue.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030627662498151745.post-63034624571994214232013-12-03T23:39:17.978-05:002013-12-03T23:39:17.978-05:00Thanks Ruth.
